JT The Brick Releases New Book

8-6-13

John Tournour, also known as FOX sports talker JT the Brick, has released a new book entitled "The Handoff." The book describes how Tournour made it in sports talk after leaving a lucrative position at Merrill Lynch to pursue his dream. Tournour's hardest challenge would come when his best friend and industry mentor, Andrew Ashwood, was diagnosed with cancer. Tournour details his journey through radio, with the help of Ashwood, and how he learned life?s most important lessons just as he was losing his friend.

Tournour writes, ?As I look back, I realize that while Andrew truly felt that he would win, that he would survive, he also felt a sense of urgency. As I look back at those thirteen months, what I feel now is a kind of frenzy. Everything felt contracted, moving at a much faster pace. And every moment seemed critical.? A portion of sales from THE HANDOFF will benefit City of Hope, a leading cancer center where Andrew Ashwood received treatment.

?JT has captured the magic of a great friendship mixed with the dynamic moving parts of our sports world -- a perfect combination,? said Julie Talbott, a colleague of Ashwood and Tournour, and President of Content and Affiliate Services for National Media Groups, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment. ?Thanks to JT and City of Hope, this book will help others going through a similar emotional journey.?

Tournour began his radio career in 1995 after winning Jim Rome's first annual Great American Smack-Off. In 2001, Fox Sports Radio hired Tournour. He's been working for the Oakland Raiders for the past 15 years, doing pre-game, post-game, and now the weekly Raiders Report. He lives in Las Vegas with his family.

MIW Releases Gender Analysis Study

6-13-13

According to the latest MIW Gender Analysis Study released by the Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio Group, out of 11,253 stations, 1,936 or 17.7 percent had women holding the GM position in 2012. That number is up over a full percentage point from 2011 which was 16.6 percent and shows continued growth from 2004, eight years ago when the percentage was only 14.9 percent. The greatest challenge for women in radio management continues to be as programmers.

Women currently only program 11.3 percent of all stations which compares to 10.7 percent seven years ago. In the top 100 markets women have made some real improvement, programming 11.8 percent of all stations which compares to only 9.6 percent in 2011.
The disappointing news in the top 100 markets is it is showing some downward movement. In 2012, 16.8 percent of stations in these markets were managed by women, compared to 17.4 percent in 2011. Overall, the best management opportunities for women continue to be in sales management although there's been essentially only a minor change for the last eight years. In 2012, 31 percent of all stations had women SMs, up a half a percentage point from last year. And in the top 100 markets 30.3 percent of the stations had women SMs, down slightly from last year.

AUDIO)After 16 Years Entercom Releases Greg Kihn

9-14-2012

A press release sent to Radio Ink from the Greg Kihn camp says the morning man has been let go by Entercom's KFOX-FM in San Francisco. Kihn just celebrated his 16th Anniversary with KFOX FM, which is believed to be the longest reigning radio industry tenure for a morning man with a single station west of the Mississippi.

Entercom's Dwight Walker tells Radio Ink, "We salute Greg on his 16 years of contributions to KFOX and the community and wish him only the best. The KFOX Morning Show will be going in a different direction and we are very excited about that direction. Stay tuned next week."

Listen to our interview with Kihn HERE.

Kihn said, ?I am unemployed, along with a large percentage of my fellow Americans, but I am an optimist. I believe for every door that closes others open. Surely, another broadcast studio door will open and I?ll be back on the air soon doing what I love to do most; entertaining my loyal fans.?

(9/15/2012 1:01:12 AM)
While his departure is classy, the statement "Kihn just celebrated his 16th Anniversary with KFOX FM, which is believed to be the longest reigning radio industry tenure for a morning man with a single station west of the Mississippi" is flat out wrong. Kim Vestal did mornings at KARA, also in San Jose, as was KFOX, for more than 20+ years.

What a pro handling his departure with dignity and class! Rare breed these days ... he'll back on the air in no time.

Film House Releases 95 Minute Feature Film

12-12-11

Many broadcasters are familiar with the name Curt Hahn and the company Film House. Back in 1981 Film House produced its first TV campaign to promote a radio station. Since then Film House has produced over 20,000 TV commercials for radio station clients all over the world. Now Film House CEO Curt Hahn is hoping the relationships He's built up over the past 30 years will help him get the word out about his new feature film entitled "Deadline."

Film House secured the rights Mark Ethridge?s novel Grievances over several other bidders according to Hahn. "Mark believed in our ability to tell his story properly." Hahn says the challenge now is to get the word out, which he's trying to do in a rather unconventional way.

"In a reversal of the typical Hollywood studio release, we?re starting with a series of premieres in cities like Miami, Charlotte and Cleveland (as opposed to New York & L.A.) in the hopes that we can attract more media attention in markets where a movie premiere isn?t an everyday occurrence. Radio is a huge part of our strategy. We look forward to connecting with the many radio folks we?ve worked with over the years as we go from city to city. Ideally we?d start  our day visiting the morning shows that would be interested in talking about a movie premiere in their city that evening. Mark and I will be traveling with members of the cast. Deadline?s a powerful  movie about two reporters solving a racially-motivated murder."

You can watch the trailer at http://www.deadlinefilm.com/.

One of the ways Hahn is getting the word out is through his Kickstarter campaign to take our Deadline Premiere Tour to more cities. We?d really appreciate any mentions about this campaign which ends January 8th. The Kickstarter video can be easily added to any website or blog.

The FCC Releases EAS Handbook

The nationwide EAS test is less than two weeks away so the FCC has released a handbook to help you figure out what to do. The November 9th test will be the first time the system is tested for a national alert. EAS is now used mostly for localized weather and Amber alerts. Broadcast attorney David Oxenford (pictured) says "as this is an important test of the EAS system, and will require broadcasters to report on their compliance, everyone should be preparing to take part - and checking their systems to make sure that they are fully functional - now."

We encourage you to read Oxenford's Blog HERE

NAB Releases Digital Radio Study

NAB FASTROAD has released the final report on field testing of digital single frequency network technology for FM in-band/on-channel (IBOC) digital radio. This work has been undertaken by iBiquity Digital Corporation, developers of the HD Radio? IBOC system used by U.S. broadcasters to transition to digital radio, and is being co-funded by iBiquity and NAB FASTROAD.

The technical report just released describes field testing of a single frequency network using Greater Media's Boston area station WKLB-FM and experimental booster station WKLB-FM1. Both digital-only and digital-plus-analog booster configurations were tested. Also included in the report are the results from experimental broadcast stations WD2XAB and WD2XAB-1, located near Baltimore, MD which were first reported on in November 2010. Here are the conclusions drawn from the testing:

The Baltimore tests showed that:
-Single-frequency networks using digital-only boosters selectively expand HD Radio signal coverage;
-Digital time delays between main and booster signals need to be adjusted to account for propagation delays in the overlap regions to minimize inter-symbol interference.

Boston tests showed that:
-Digital coverage is enhanced within the station?s protected contour when using a SFN with a digital-only booster;
- Two overlapping, properly aligned and synchronized, digital signals do not degrade HD Radio performance;
- A Delphi automotive receiver with attributes of a well-designed, modern, FM receiver experienced little interference to the main station?s host analog signal near an all-digital booster station;
- An older Chrysler automotive receiver and a typical analog clock radio had difficulty receiving the main station?s host analog signal near an all-digital booster station.

FCC Releases Call Letter Change List

July 1, 2011

In case this kind of thin interests you, the FCC has released its list of what they describe as "Call Sign Actions." It's a list of requests made by broadcasters to reserve call letters for a station they are about to own or put on the air and a list of call letters broadcasters would like to modify (change from and change to). The commission accepted applications between May 24th and June 24th and put out the list yesterday. And in case you were wondering, there is nothing on the list from Merlin Media.
