Local TV Revenue Drops By Nearly 8%

5-1-2012

BIA/Kelsey says local television over-the-air revenues in 2011 dipped 7.8% from the previous year, due primarily to the economy and the odd-year election cycle. BIA says in 2011 stations took in $17.9 billion in revenues, compared with $19.4 billion in 2010. In 2011 local television stations earned $535 million from online sources, an 18.7% jump compared with $450 million in 2010.

In 2012 combined over-the-air and online  revenues are forecast to rise to $20.3 billion, based on the presidential and other elections, overall improved consumer spending, and growth in online ad  spending. In terms of transactions, BIA/Kelsey reports the industry saw an uptick in transactions in 2011 over 2010, with 50 station sales totaling $1.1 billion.

"Local advertising industry revenues typically rise and fall depending on the political year," said Mark Fratrik, Ph.D., vice president and chief economist, BIA/Kelsey. "Advertising income for local television is trending upward and showing signs of rebound, with a good first quarter for many public television companies. Still, the 2012 over-the-air television advertising market is not what it was 11 years ago."

"Nearly 50% Say Pandora Should be Called Radio"

4-30-2012

Jacobs Media has released data from its "Techsurvey8" which was gathered online from January 31st  to February 15th. Over 170 stations in the U.S. and Canada took part for a total of 57,358 radio listener survey participants. 43% of Pandora users say the Internet pure play should be considered ?radio.? 49% said no. Pandora is the most popular pure-play Internet option, according to the Jacobs study. 45% of ?streamies? listen to some extent. iHeartRadio came in a distant second with 19%, Spotify was third with 7% followed by TuneIn at 7% and Slacker at 5%. Favorite songs and local personalities were the highest ranking reasons listeners believe AM/FM radio still matters.

According to Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs, ?The data from Techsurvey8 strongly suggest that focusing on connecting emotionally and meaningfully with listeners is radio?s best avenue toward remaining relevant and vibrant in the face of new digital competition.?  Why AM/FM Radio still matters: While ?favorite songs? and local personalities are the highest ranking elements, there are four emotional triggers that listeners value: Having a radio on while they work, helping them get in a better mood, providing a feeling of companionship, offering an escape from the pressures of everyday life

Protecting The In-Car Listening Franchise: The car is becoming a major battleground for radio. More than half of all respondents say that most of their radio listening takes place in cars. And nearly half (48%) say they?re able to connect a smartphone or mp3 player in their main vehicle. One in ten (9%) now drives a car equipped with an entertainment/information system like Ford?s Sync, especially fans of News/Talk and Sports/Talk.

Jacobs Media will host a series of format-centric webinars over the next several weeks to take a more granular look at the relationships between radio?s core formats and the audiences that enjoy them.

Beasley Q4 Revenue Drops Nearly 7%

2-3-2012

Beasley Broadcasting reported Q4 2011 numbers this morning and net revenue to a hit of nearly 7%. Beasley CEO George Beasley said, ?Our fourth quarter revenue decline reflects a combination of weak overall national spending in our markets and several unique national advertising issues that we have addressed or which were essentially one time in nature. In addition, approximately one third of the overall revenue decline relates to a reduction in political spending in a non-election year."

Mr. Beasley went on to say, "Even during periods of lower revenue, our bottom line continues to benefit from our streamlined cost and operating structure. In light of the challenges faced during the quarter, we lowered station operating expenses by 5% while total operating expenses for the quarter were also reduced by 5% on a year-over-year basis. These factors, combined with a significant reduction in interest expense, led to a 1.7% increase in 2011 fourth quarter net income."

?Radio advertising remained relatively stable despite widespread economic concerns and volatility in the capital markets throughout the year. Importantly, during the fourth quarter and throughout 2011, we continued to make progress across the organization in enhancing operating efficiencies and maintaining a disciplined approach to spending. Overall, the industry recorded seven consecutive quarters of growth through the third quarter of 2011 which underscores our belief that radio remains both resilient and highly relevant in a digital world. During the quarter, the Company celebrated its 50th consecutive year in radio broadcasting and our success over this period has been defined by our ability to bring consumers and advertisers a platform that efficiently addresses their respective needs."

NPR Stalker Gets Nearly 4 Year in Jail.

Maine resident John Crosby (pictured) received the 46 month sentence after threatening to rape, torture and kill Melissa Block and Guy Raz, of "All Things Considered." It was the maximum penalty allowable under federal guidelines. The 38 year old man contacted the two NPR hosts on the Internet from Portland, Maine, back in January, according to court records.

In messages to the hosts, he threatened to rape, beat, torture and kill Block, and he applied an ethnic slur to Raz and threatened his life, authorities said. When Crosby was arrested in Portland on January 26, investigators found a shotgun in his car. Because Crosby was previously convicted of state robbery and heroin possession felonies, he had been barred from having firearms, officials said. Read the FBI affidavit HERE
