TagStation, iBiquity, Team For Digital Dash

9-11-2014

In a deal announced Thursday at the Radio Show (seen here are iBiquity CEO Bob Struble and Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan), HD Radio developer iBiquity Digital is teaming with TagStation LLC -- developer of the NextRadio app and TagStation data services for smartphones -- to combine their technologies and services in an integrated automotive platform. The companies say the combination "will blend the best of broadcast technology and IP-delivered services to enhance the in-car user experience and unlock the full potential of connected services."

Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan said, "HD Radio Technology has enjoyed tremendous success in automotive adoption and is now supported by all major car manufacturers as well as over 2,300 U.S. radio stations. That success and their commitment to developing innovative broadcast solutions, made this joint development a logical next step in the evolution of the NextRadio/TagStation platform."

The agreement also provides for expansion of TagStation into critical international markets, and provides a framework for expanding NextRadio and HD Radio technology in mobile devices.

Said iBiquity chief Bob Struble, "The TagStation  team has demonstrated a unique understanding of broadcast business opportunities and the mobile applications space. Their development expertise and ability to rapidly deploy valuable consumer services has driven their success to date with Sprint. We look forward to working with the exceptional team to bring these services and an enriched broadcast user experience to HD Radio listeners."

iBiquity to Showcase New Mitsubishi HD Radio

4-8-13
This will be the first public demonstration of the new advanced navigation system to incorporate Nokia?s HD Radio traffic service. The service will now be available to Mitsubishi owners free of charge. Drivers will have access to real-time traffic information that extends beyond highways to include smaller roadways which will have the same level of accuracy on traffic speed and time delays due to road closures or construction. Additionally, Nokia?s HD Radio service will also include weather reports and fuel prices.
iBiquity COO Jeff Jury said, ?We are excited to be able to demonstrate this new platform to the public. This is an excellent example of how automakers and broadcasters are partnering to leverage our technology to offer new services to their customers. Mitsubishi is one of the first OEMs that have announced their integration of HD Radio Digital Traffic services and we expect a number of additional announcements throughout the year.?

(AUDIO) Emmis, iBiquity to Unveil New HD Technology

4-10-2012

The NAB LABS commissioned Emmis Interactive, Intel Corporation and iBiquity Corporation to develop a standardized HD Radio Smartphone eco-system. The effort includes an "end-to-end" platform that provides an Advanced HD Radio Smartphone App and the next generation of TagStation, the broadcast insertion system that powers it all. We spoke to Emmis SVP/Chief Technology Officer Paul Brenner yesterday about the press conference and why what they have to say is important to broadcasters and the Cell phone industry.

Next Monday at Noon at the iBiquity booth at the NAB in Vegas, Kevin Gage, EVP and Chief Technology Officer at the NAB will be joined by iBiquity President and CEO Bob Struble, Intel's Dr. David Rolston Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan and Emmis Interactive Founder and Co-President Rey Mena to unveil the results from their work. We spoke to Emmis SVP/Chief Technology Officer Paul Brenner yesterday about the press conference and why what they have to say is important to broadcasters and the Cell phone industry.

Here's our interview with BRENNER

It's very sad when the day comes that our large station owners who own this HD technology tries to force all the rest and majority of the radio station owners to adopt HD that will never because of reception problems due to the law of physics be better than the worldwide installed FM technology that work excellent in mobile and sensitive reception areas like NY, etc !! Wow now they want it in a cell phone ?
Would it not ne easier for a standard FM chip !!!!!

Why aren't we seeing stand-alone HD radios in vehicles? These automakers are only including HD Radio in expensive Sync, Entune, and IntelliLink systems. Is iBiquity trying to hide the true costs on installing HD Radio from the law firms of Keefe Bartels and Wolf? Is it because BMW and Volvo have tried HD Radio standard, but ened up with serious, on-going TSBs/recalls, and have to replace these expensive, "defective" HD radios with other "defective" HD radios? Only a few FM-HD stations have expressed interest in upping power, and still no word on the asymmetrical side-bands. Could it be only a few FM-HD stations are really interested? Why do stations continue to abandon their HD Radio signals? What's truely driving the automakers? Did iBiquity dupe them in tests, or perhaps as Rich Wood suspects, the automakers never really tested HD radio. Volvo is offering the Premium VIII HD Radio with Artist Experience, but iBiquity admitted to serious flaws in their implementation. Think this has something to do with iBiquity's hopes of going IPO?

The problem with radios in phones has been FM reception because of the lack of an antenna. Some phones use the headphone wire as an antenna.

Until HD stations take full advantage of the maximum power levels allowed, HD Radio will not solve the reception problem in phones.

OTOH, HD Radio in new vehicles is going gangbusters. Chrysler and Nissan are are lagging, but they'll announce soon.

Time for all FM stations to go HD. Time for the FCC to set analog sunset dates.

(4/10/2012 10:56:35 AM)
Car makers ARE putting HD Radios in their vehicles. VW, Jaguar, Ford, GM, Cadillac, BMW, Hyundai, Land Rover, Mini, Audi, Scion, Kia, Rolls Royce, Toyota, Lincoln, Volvo, and Tesla all offer HDRadio. With the exception of Chrysler (which is coming) this is a very complete list. I'll admit that HDRadio is not catching on as fast as we would all like, but lets not forget how long it took for FM to become the dominant band and it offered Stereo and vastly superior sound quality!

This is actually a brilliant move. Folks, me included, already use our phones to listen to web radio. A chip like this puts HD radio on an even footing. It's what this technology needed since no one is rushing out to buy HD capable radios and car makers aren't putting them in vehicles. This may actually salvage some of the money wasted on HD so far.

June 15, 2011

iBiquity Digital is offering cash incentives to reward radio industry Account Executives and Sales Managers that use the HD2/HD3 multicast channels made possible by HD Radio Technology in their clients' on-air advertising campaigns. Some examples of possible entries include NTR events, campaigns exclusively on the HD Radio channel, or campaigns that combines all digital assets of on-air, website, and HD2/HD3 channels. The prizes are: $5,000 to Campaign Judged Most Effective, $1,000 2nd Place Award, HD Radio Receivers Awarded to 3rd Place Finishers.

Joe D?Angelo, iBiquity Digital?s Senior Vice President of Broadcast Programs and Advanced Services, stated ?We are excited about the potential of this program to help publicize the innovative sales programs we are seeing in the market, and to influence more stations to bundle their digital assets.  HD2/HD3 Channels are becoming increasingly prevalent in the ratings and now is the time to market the unique benefits they offer to advertisers.?

Sales teams can submit their stories of campaign success using HD2/HD3 channels at hdradioalliance.com between June 15th and August 15th 2011. There are three reward levels: A grand prize of $5,000 cash, followed by $1,000 for second place, with the third place winner receiving a total HD Radio upgrade for car, home, and on the go. The panel of judges includes John Potter, Vice President/Training at the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB), Mark Turley, Director of Corporate Media Sales for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and Diane Warren, President of the HD Radio Alliance. Prizes will be awarded at the Radio Show in September.

You've got to be kidding! They couldn't sell them on QVC and now their giving them away. How tacky. Digital radio - what a joke.
(6/16/2011 12:22:59 AM)
The problem with adding advertising to the HD2 and HD3 channels is the reason people listen to them now is because of the lack of advertising.

It is true that the content on the HD2 and HD3 channels is excellent, but that will change as HD Radio continues to increase market penetration and stations try to monetize the sub-channels.

(6/15/2011 5:34:13 PM)
"HD2/HD3 Channels are becoming increasingly prevalent in the ratings and now is the time to market the unique benefits they offer to advertisers."

Yea, because of analog FM translators! Another stunt from iBiquity's bag of tricks. Sad. Go Pandora, congrats on your IPO! iBquity says "Me too!, Me too!" LOL!

(6/15/2011 3:14:53 PM)
I guess they finally found the right price for receivers.
(6/15/2011 1:58:59 PM)
if they had a real value prop for customers, they wouldn't have to resort to cheesy giveaways!
