In a deal announced Thursday at the Radio Show (seen here are iBiquity CEO Bob Struble and Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan), HD Radio developer iBiquity Digital is teaming with TagStation LLC -- developer of the NextRadio app and TagStation data services for smartphones -- to combine their technologies and services in an integrated automotive platform. The companies say the combination "will blend the best of broadcast technology and IP-delivered services to enhance the in-car user experience and unlock the full potential of connected services."
Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan said, "HD Radio Technology has enjoyed tremendous success in automotive adoption and is now supported by all major car manufacturers as well as over 2,300 U.S. radio stations. That success and their commitment to developing innovative broadcast solutions, made this joint development a logical next step in the evolution of the NextRadio/TagStation platform."
The agreement also provides for expansion of TagStation into critical international markets, and provides a framework for expanding NextRadio and HD Radio technology in mobile devices.
Said iBiquity chief Bob Struble, "The TagStation team has demonstrated a unique understanding of broadcast business opportunities and the mobile applications space. Their development expertise and ability to rapidly deploy valuable consumer services has driven their success to date with Sprint. We look forward to working with the exceptional team to bring these services and an enriched broadcast user experience to HD Radio listeners."
