Emmis Signs Going-Private Deal

Emmis Communications lhas signed a definitive merger agreement that will result in its being taken private by JS Acquisition, formed by Emmis Chairman/CEO Jeff Smulyan. The transaction will be through a cash tender offer of $2.40 a share for EMMS common stock and an exchange offer of notes due 2017 for preferred stock.

FCC Opens Inquiry On Media Ownership

The FCC has released a notice of inquiry as part of its 2010 quadrennial media-ownership review, with the aim of, the commission said, a "fresh look at the current rules to determine whether they promote the commission's goals of competition, localism, and diversity." Commissioners Michael Copps and Robert McDowell released statements supporting the NOI, with Copps saying the focus should be on creating "democracy-building" regulations and McDowell saying he believes the best answers will come from those in the media industry, not DC bureaucrats.

Lawmakers Move To Review Communications Act

A group of Democratic lawmakers, including Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John D. Rockefeller (D-WV) and House Committee On Energy And Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA), have announced that they plan to begin a process to update the Communications Act. The first step will be a series of bipartisan meetings to discuss the issues.

Study: Social Media Priorities Differ From Traditional Press

The Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism reports in a new study that the news stories that gain traction with social media such as blogs, Twitter, and YouTube "differ substantially" from those that lead in the mainstream press. Additionally, says Pew, political partisanship in social media "does not lean strongly to one side or the other," and "both conservative and liberal voices come through strongly."
