Tech Summit: 'Radio's Future Is A Multiplatform Future'

Yesterday was opening day of Radio Ink's first RadioTech Summit, led off by keynoter James Cridland, Radio Futurologist from the UK's Not At All Bad Ltd. Cridland talked about the potential for radio's future, pointing to examples from around the world and in the U.S. Australia, Cridland said, is "leading the way" on digital audio broadcasting, with, among other things, temporary "pop-up" DAB stations. The Tech Summit wraps up Thursday midday and will be followed in the afternoon by Radio Ink's Convergence conference. The first day of Radio Ink's first RadioTech Summit offered panels on "The Wayne Gretzky School of Broadcasting," looking at how radio can leverage interactivity and online tools to get ahead of trends; a session on the ramifications of the HD Radio power-up; and a look at radio's options in the apps space.

RadioTech Summit: 'Rewiring The Studio'

Radio Ink's RadioTech Summit lineup on Wednesday included on "Rewiring the Studio" with Harris Broadcast Director/PR&E Studio Solutions Ted Staros and Axia Audio Marketing Director Clark Novak looking at the networked radio studio, and Richard Rudman on upcoming developments in EAS. The day closed out with ATSC's Jerry Whitaker on the mobile DTV standard and what it could mean for audio.

Nunzio DeGregorio joins Premiere Radio Networks as VP for New York sales. He was most recently director of corporate sales for Citadel Broadcasting.

Citadel Adds Two In Corporate Sales

Citadel Broadcasting names Greg Simonson and Pamela Godfrey directors of corporate sales, with both coming over from Katz Media Group.

Fina Tapped As SBS/Miami NSM

Juan Fina is the newly named NSM for SBS Radio in Miami. He's been working in sales for the cluster for 10 years.

Metro Traffic Adds Sales Directors

John Curry is named director of sales/Southwest for Metro Traffic, while Brendan Walsh takes the same post for the Midwest.

Whipple Joins Marketron As CFO

Tom Whipple has been named chief financial officer at broadcast business software provider Marketron.

LeGrett Named MM For CCR/Rochester

Kevin LeGrett comes to Clear Channel Radio as market manager for the six-station Rochester, NY, cluster.

Arbitron, SBS Enter Settlement Agreement

Arbitron, SBS Enter Settlement Agreement

Arbitron and Spanish Broadcasting System have come to a settlement agreement, under which SBS will resume encoding in all of SBS's PPM markets. SBS has also extended its deal with Arbitron for PPM ratings. Arbitron President/CEO Bill Kerr said, "SBS is a valued client, and we look forward to growing our relationship, and moving forward together in a productive and meaningful way."

Clear Channel Radio, Fox News Radio Renew Deal

Fox News Radio will continue to provide national news for more than 100 Clear Channel Radio News/Talk stations as the companies renew their agreement for another five years.

Emmis Tender Offer Begins

A tender offer by JS Acquisition to purchase Emmis' outstanding class A stock for $2.40 per share has begun, and is set to run through June 29. JS Acquisition was formed by Emmis Chairman/CEO Jeff Smulyan to take the company private.

Pandora Picks Up New Financing

Pandora recently closed a round of financing led by GGV Capital, with additional investment from Allen & Co. Pandora President/CEO Joe Kennedy said that "this additional financing gives us the opportunity to invest in resources we need to continue to execute on our strategy."

Groups Ask FCC To Look At 'Hate Speech'

In a comment filed in the FCC's Future of Media proceeding, groups including the National Hispanic Media Coalition, Prometheus Radio Project, and the Rainbow Push Coalition are asking the FCC to look at "hate speech" in media and explore "non-regulatory ways to counteract its negative impacts."

FCC Denies Appeal From Ex-Tama CEO

The FCC has denied an application for review filed by former Tama Broadcasting CEO Dr. Glenn Cherry, who had asked the FCC to reconsider its earlier denial of his objection to the assignment of Tama radio licenses to a receiver.
