Greater Media Joins iHeartradio Team

1-9-2012

iHeartRadio is moving closer to becoming radio's portal for stations that stream. Clear Channel announced  Greater Media will add its 22 stations to iHeartRadio. Late last year, Cumulus said it would be adding all of its station to the platform. Clear Channel Radio President/CEO John Hogan says, "Adding Greater Media to iHeartRadio only improves our leading digital destination for consumers, expanding their ability to find the best and most complete online radio experience anywhere. Clear Channel Radio and Greater Media understand that radio connects local businesses to consumers like no other medium can, and this agreement offers more choices for our listeners, which is what they want."

Under the agreement, Greater Media's 22 AM and FM radio stations in Boston, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Detroit, and New Jersey will be available on the iHeartRadio platform, beginning April 2012.  iHeartRadio is Clear Channel Radio's free digital radio service that offers more than 800 broadcast and digital-only radio stations from 150 cities, plus the ability to create custom radio stations, in one fully integrated service.

"We are thrilled to be able to provide our listeners with even greater access to our stations, anywhere they may be listening throughout the country, with this exciting platform," said Greater Media Chairman/CEO Peter Smyth.

The Cumulus/Clear Channel deal under which all Cumulus stations will move to iHeartRadio is in exchange for Clear Channel's promotion of Cumulus' SweetJack daily deals program. That is expected to roll out in March and April.

Broadcasters should be wary of giving the mobile keys to Clear Channel. There are better, less conflicted, options. Tunein, Slacker come to mind. There's a reason Clear Channel won't reciprocate and make their streams available in anyone else's app.

Their marketing, if only they were a fast-food chain, could be: "Any sandwich anywhere - so long as it's a pablum on white bread sandwich."

I'm famished already.
