After 34 Years DelGiorno Hangs It Up

1-6-2012

A familiar New Orleans voice will go silent. After 34 years on the air in the Big Easy, Bob DelGiorno is retiring. DelGiorno spent the majority of his radio life at WWL. He said, ?I love WWL radio. This place, this station has been very good to me. It?s opened up a lot of doors and opportunities...and allowed me to have a great relationship with the people of New Orleans and the city I?ve really grown to love. But, now it?s time to get off the road, to give up the daily responsibility and just enjoy waking up later and enjoying life.?

Entercom New Orleans Market Manager Chris Claus said, ?Bob has been an amazing contributor to the success of WWL radio and he?s been the voice New Orleans has awakened to for decades and we wish him the very best in his retirement years.? WWL Program Director Diane Newman said, ?I?ve worked with Bob for many, many years.  He?s the consummate professional and a true friend.  We?ve been through countless episodes--Katrina, the BP oil disaster, 9-11...the Saints first Super Bowl win and LSU?s championship runs. We?ll miss Bob; he?s family.?

Tommy Tucker will transition into the WWL morning slot. He's filled in for DelGiorno for years.

Bob was a brilliant broadcaster from the second he went on the air - a natural, gifted entertainer, an exceptional strategist and an extraordinarily fierce competitor. Now that he has some extra time, I hope he writes a book!

I was at WOLF, Syracuse, when Bob Dell became the program director after being lured over from the other top 40 station. He was a firey competitor, wanting to bury his old station as was the case in many smaller, competative markets. His morning show was energetic, uptempo and his battle cry was , "If Dell can't get you up in the morning, noboday can!" Well, the competitor, WNDR, fought back, hiring 2 WOLF jocks (me and Marv ALbert) and the battle was on. The stations made Syracuse radio fun and furious and Dell maintained strong numbers for his tenure as PD. I haven't talked with Bob since 1962 but wanted to take this opportunity to say congratulations on a great career and best of luck. You earned it, Bob!
