(AUDIO) Inside the Wilson/Ingstad $9 Million Deal

5-2-13

When you speak with Jim Ingstad or Larry Wilson, it's hard to keep track of the number of times they say the words live and local. When it comes to the radio stations they operate, that's what they are all about. In fact, Wilson named his latest company, which closed on Triad Broadcasting this week, L&L for Live and Local. Wilson sold the Fargo cluster he had just purchased from Triad to Ingstad for $9 million. Ingstad had just sold his Fargo cluster to Duke Wright, another great live and local broadcaster. Ingstad told Radio Ink last night he loves radio in Fargo, North Dakota. He also told us how much fun it was doing business with two great broadcasters that he had never met before, Larry Wilson and Duke Wright. And, how excited he is about the future of radio. Live and local radio, that is. LISTEN HERE

Jim Ingstad has proven he's one of the great businessmen/broadcasters in the Midwest. I worked for the Ingstads for 18 years and was given the freedom on the air that most broadcasters only dream of. Their radio stations were always very local and full of some of the best small market people I have ever worked with.

Is the "live and local" frame helping or hurting radio?

In 1975 the audience for FM radio surpassed AM radio. AM radio revenues never recovered.

While listeners migrate in mass from FM to Internet radio (surging to 120m+), FM/AM operators invest little in content/technology.

Unless, as a whole, the radio industry invests heavily in compelling original content and new technology, it's audience drain will intensify. 10m in Spotify marketing is ON. Disrupt or be disrupted.

Jim Ingstad is one of the great business people I have ever consulted. His stations were not only live, they were ALIVE. The halls buzzed, they were full of people all night, they had real newsrooms and news teams. But his crowning achievement was hiring Nancy Odney to run them and I hope she gets to stay.

How great is hearing that deal. That is of another century. Two guys trusting one another enjoying being together and making a win win deal. That is the answer for all business not just radio. Local business, where every one is a stake holder and you as a person are actually important. Wall Street and corporate America(in it just for the money),this concept is destroying the soul of our country.

I can think of nothing as satisfying as banking the millions from selling to Clear Channel, then going back and give them dimes on the dollar for the same property, then turning around and selling at a gain again.
There are about 5 operators who radio people should emulate and Clear Channel isn't one of them. CC's appearing on a panel or in a program assures my non-attendence.
