How far away are we from an FM radio chip in cell phones? We should get an update this morning, shortly after 9AM, from Emmis Communications CEO Jeff Smulyan. Smulyan will report quarterly earnings this morning and it's on these conference calls he usually takes a question or two about the progress on the FM Chip which Smulyan has been spearheading for the industry. Up until now Smulyan would only says the app that will ignite the chip on phones will be ready later this year. Since Smulyan convinced Sprint to install the chip in some of its 2013 phones Emmis has been working on the app that the company is hopeful the entire radio industry will embrace much like it's embraced iHeartRadio. Smulyan believes the chip will not only serve as an easy way for consumers to access their local radio stations, especially during emergencies, he believes it will lead to more revenue for radio as advertisers move more and more toward mobile to get their products noticed.
Smulyan will also, of course, give an update on how Emmis did during the last quarter. The company has gotten very lean the past 24 months and Smulyan has been very optimistic that his company, with its lower debt, will be able to grow again. He recently told Radio Ink, "for the second year in a row, we have significantly outperformed our radio markets and the radio industry" and " We're talking about buying, not selling. What we might do should be very interesting to people."
