He was loving life. Steve Black was a successful DJ at a rock station in Detroit, he was about to get married, his future wife also worked in radio, and he was hanging around with rock stars. The ladder was a fringe benefit of working at WRIF in Detroit. Black and his wife Sabrina boarded a plane for Hawaii, the chosen destination for their marriage. Sabrina was sick on the flight and so at a stopover in San Francisco Black took her to the hospital. The diagnosis was cancer. Six years later she was gone.
Steve Black has written a book about how he dealt with the enormous heartbreak and depression after losing his wife. He also tells a story about a devastating call he received from the hospital, while he was on the air, and how many of his artist and radio friends and the city of Detroit came through for him when he needed it the most. The one thing that kept Black from going insane, he says, was radio. The name of his book is From Black to Light. You can order it HERE. Sometimes, the most difficult thing to do when a personality's "real" life is crashing and crumbling around them is to continue doing "The Show". Yet, it helps.
