At 5PM California time, listeners upset by the firings and format change at KGO radio plan to protest the changes outside the KGO Studios at 900 Front Street in San Francisco. Protesters say they will hold a candlelight vigil and collect canned food donations for the Bayview-Hunter's Point YMCA Food Pantry. The food donations are being made in honor of Ray Taliaferro, legendary bay area broadcaster who was fired on December 1st along with other well known radio personalities at KGO. Mr. Taliaferro was born and raised in the Hunter's Point neighborhood and had worked at KGO radio for decades.
The "Former Listeners of KGO" Facebook page features a photo with a can, a KGO bumper sticker on it and a candle inside teh can. Today, that page says "The December 1st firings by Cumulus sends the message that large corporations do not care about progressive and free media in America. Former Listeners of KGO radio have banded together on Facebook and Twitter to send the message to Cumulus and other media monopolies that this is not OK with us. Nearly 5000 people have joined the online campaign." Although the post says 5,000 people there are about 3,000 people who have joined the page.
