There was one item from the Emmis conference call that may be a major concern to broadcasters and that is national ad revenue. The company reported national was down over 8% for the quarter in markets that reported down 15% to Miller Kaplan (Emmis operates in New York, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Terre Haute, and Austin). Those numbers make you wonder how the rest of the industry will report national, at least in those markets, especially during a year radio is relying somewhat on political dollars for a lift. Local revenue was down 2% for Emmis in markets that were down 6% overall. Emmis also reported that automotive remains the biggest spending category for the company and the wireless category was down double digits.
