Bubba to Clear Channel's 98 Rock?

8-29-14

That's the speculation in Tampa after it was announced The Bubba the Love Sponge morning show would no longer air on Cox's 102.5 The Bone, where it had been heard the previous 6 years before ending immediately on Friday. The two sides had been negotiating a new contract and could not come to an agreement. Radio Ink has been told by several sources that Bubba, who is syndicated on several other stations, will begin his new deal on 98 Rock in January of 2015.

Cox Tampa Market Manager Keith Lawless said, ?The Bone will discontinue airing the Bubba the Love Sponge Show effective immediately. We appreciate everything the Bubba the Love Sponge Show has done for us over the past six years. We now are taking the station in a different direction. CMG periodically changes direction, talent, and format of its various media programs in order to provide our audiences with fresh perspectives and compelling content. The Bone has proven to be one of America?s most outspoken radio stations. Tampa Bay can expect The Bone to continue to deliver ?Real, Raw, Radio? every day.?

Here's the new lineup
?        Morning drive (6 a.m. - 10 a.m.) ? The Mike Calta Show
?        10 a.m. - noon ? The Billy Madison Show
?        Noon - 3 p.m. ? The Shannon Burke Show
?        3 p.m. - 7 p.m. ? In Your Face with Drew Garabo
?        7 p.m. - 10 p.m. ? The Bone Daily Rewind Show

About time Cox killed the cancer.

Deleted The Bone ap. No reason to listen. Not shocked BTLS is gone (it was obvious something was happening)-shocked that the Billy Madison show is still in the line up. Bubba Army.

Probably b/c BTLS went down hill right after Spice left the show. I'm not sure if Spice gave Bubba direction, reeled him in, or what-- but the show became very bad, very fast.

Clear Channel's Castronovo Drops 100 Pounds

Paul Castronovo has been hanging out behind a radio microphone for over 30 years. That's three decades in a job that's mostly sedentary. Castronovo and partner Ron Brewer are now doing mornings in South Florida for Clear Channel. The duo has been together since 1991. We spoke to Castronovo about his spectacular weight loss success and what prompted him to make changes to his lifestyle.

How much weight did you lose and how long did it take you?
Typical radio guy with bad habits here. Up at 4 a.m., run out the door, eat crap from clients, or starve until the show's over. Eat a bad, heavy lunch, take a nap, eat dinner, pass out. Do it again the next day. Finally, around two years ago, the Miami Dolphins challenged me to do a 30-mile bike ride for cancer, and since my wife is a breast cancer survivor, I couldn't say no. I started out slowly, 10 miles a few days a week, until I worked myself up to do the big ride. Now, I'm down 100 pounds, and would consider myself an avid cyclist.

How do you feel after losing all that weight, compared to having it all on you?
I tell you what feels good, all the hot babes that are throwing themselves at me, it's getting ridiculous, it's a curse really. No, the truth is, I am a different guy now and tend to be a lot more active.

What's your plan to keep it off?
I've got a personal trainer that I train with three days a week at the gym. (I'm paying him, so you know I'm not gonna blow it off!). The other days, I'll ride the bike. Listen, I love to eat and drink, hell, I own a vineyard in Italy (www.castronovovineyards.com) so, I eat healthy Monday to Friday and I go out to dinner on the weekends. It's a pretty simple plan, but it works for me.

Radio isn't exactly a strenuous line of work?
Hey, I have to walk all the way to the bathroom! I've all but banned the free food that the restaurants and clients want to throw at us every damn morning. It's so easy to slide into that. I eat every three hours, but I am eating healthy stuff. There's a company down here that delivers healthy, quality, fresh foods to my house.

Have you become a fitness preacher now?
Oh yeah, I'm annoying the hell out of my radio partner, Ron, but I don't throw it in my listeners' faces. There's nothing worse than being "that guy."

What advice can you give other radio people about how to try to stay fit and healthy at a job that's mostly sedentary?
Seriously, get the food right and make exercise a priority. It's just what I do Monday to Friday. They say 90 percent of it is diet, and I believe that. Pay for a trainer and have them help you get your metabolism going.

Congratulate Castronovo on his weight loss success HERE

RI: What advice can you offer readers on how to succeed, to get to the top and reach their goals?
Wagner: Determine what position you would ultimately like to have and seek out a mentorship relationship with someone who has that position.  You can then build your plan on what experience and steps you need to take to get to your goal. Work hard, be professional, positive, honest, inquisitive and always go above and beyond.  Your work and presence should make a difference to your team. Actively seek out and take on new opportunities to learn and get known within your stations, company and market.

Develop strong relationships and super serve your clients and listeners. They are key members of your team and business.   Appreciate and treat co-workers , especially your support team, with respect as they will always be an important part of your success. Be open to change so you can quickly adapt to our constantly evolving business and market.  Once in a leadership position, you need to effectively communicate your vision, set high expectations, hold the team accountable to goals and celebrate successes. You also can?t be afraid of making tough decisions regarding people, shows, formats or expenses in order to improve your business and results.

What mistakes can you help them avoid?
Take care of your reputation as it always precedes you. Avoid burning bridges- you never know who you will be working for or with in the future. Communicate your career goals to your managers and seek out their feedback on how you are progressing and areas to improve.  Actively pursue upcoming job openings which pertain to your goals and make sure to apply for the openings. Many people think that they will be recognized with advancement for their good work but you need to ask and actively pursue the opportunities you want.

Why have you succeeded?
Over the years, I have had the honor to put together and work with some really talented mentors, managers, personalities and teams as well as great owners like Clear Channel.  Recruiting, hiring, maintaining and growing the best talent and matching their skills to the right position has been key to my being able to create successful, high performing teams and achieve and deliver results.  We all spend more time at work than at home so I have always strived to create a focused but positive and fun culture where people want to come.  Success is always earned as a team.

I never forget the quote by Althea Gibson:  ?No matter what accomplishments you make, somebody helped you.? Participating and giving back to the community by leading and serving on charitable and industry boards has also been a top focus. It?s been a privilege to live and work in some special markets and I believe it?s our obligation to always give back and support the community that has given so much to us. So…How Many Channels do You Have?

Let?s talk about content. Yours. For many of you, your content consists of music (that you picked out for listeners), commercials, and a jock giving call letters, time and temp.  Others of you feature compelling talk hosts, either piped in or local.  All of this goes out under your brand via 2 outlets, your broadcast tower and your Internet stream.

Now let?s talk about what you could be doing with some imagination and innovation?what could happen if you stretched a little bit.

Development 1: Google?s YouTube just announced the launch of 100 new channels of professionally produced video, covering subjects like news, health, pets, celebrities, music, comedy, even superheroes.  The content will come from sources like the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Jay-Z, Shaq, Madonna, Deepak Chopra, even brands like Red Bull.

The money deal is, YouTube gets 55% of the ad revenue these videos bring after their initial investment is recouped.  These new channels will generate 25 hours of quality original content per day.  And while it?s obvious people like watching videos online (users stream 2 billion YouTube videos daily, twice as many as last year), don?t think for a minute Google will stop there.  The new channels will get to TVs via Google TV, and, thanks to their recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility, probably a set-top box of its own.

A VP at media-buying agency Universal McCann says, "This capitalizes on the trend of creating niche programming, thinking about people's passions and creating communities around them."

Development 2: Pandora, which in 6 very short years has found over 100 million listening outlets, is offering itself to businesses of all sizes for in-store background music through DMX, a leading provider of such things.  How much will this cost mom & pop?  As little as $25/month!  And the background music industry represents $750 million a year.

So here are companies who are almost just like you.  They don?t necessarily make content.  But they?re figuring out new ways to present the content they license in new ways and in new places.  YouTube would not resign itself to just being a place where people watch amateur videos on their computers.  Pandora would not resign itself to just being a place where individuals listen to custom music on their computers.  They keep thinking, keep moving, keep stretching.  Stretching toward where the money is.

And then there?s us.  For whatever reason, we have been amazingly quick to resign ourselves to forever being what we were 20 years ago.  Here we are with advantages over the two examples above, because we do generate some of our own content.  We just won?t do anything with it except desperately cling to our little slice of the pie one month longer.

Let me quote the VP of the media-buying company again.  "This capitalizes on the trend of creating niche programming, thinking about people's passions and creating communities around them."  Are you doing that?

Facebook offers your radio station a chance to launch all the tab views, channels and stations you want.  You could be creating limitless niche outlets to super-serve your audience, community and advertisers, all under your brand.  And if you ask me how that?s going to help your PPM, I?m going to spew.  In case it hasn?t dawned on you yet, you need something more to sell than airtime Jack.  There?s a reason you can?t afford to pay your lone surviving jock over 35k.

Stretch what you offer.  Stretch how you offer it.  Stretch toward the money.

Clear Channel's Pandora Feature Rolls Out on The iHeartradio App This Fall.

June 27, 2011

With Pandora now public, all eyes are on that company transitioning from a wildly popular music listening tool to a successful business model that can sustain serious profits for investors for years to come. Much has been written by digital gurus and self-professed Internet experts about whether or not that can happen. Fact is, as time goes by, Pandora may morph several times, finding new ways to generate revenue and profits. At this point in time, as Pandora deals with the high cost of music fees and figures out how to sell more advertising without diluting what listeners love so much, radio's big dog is waiting in the wings with it's own version of music curation.

Clear Channel is working feverishly to integrate Thumbplay into iHeartdaio and the company says a beta version of the revised app will be ready this fall. As the competition wedges into the Pandora space "it might even be harder to find a workable business model for Pandora." Who says that? Clear Channel's Bob Pittman.

The Clear Channel plan is to make the next generation of iHeartradio, with a Pandora-like feature, completely seamless and integrated into the app. It's almost as if Clear Channel is saying we're going to take your entire business model, Pandora, and turn it into a tab on our app. Thank you very much for creating a cool service, but it's really only one piece of the listening experience. It's not "THE" piece.

The question that intrigues us is what happens to Pandora when Clear Channel and its 750 plus radio stations and other marketing platforms begin to promote the new iHeartradio app with listener playlist creation as a "special feature"? Triton Media Group Chief Operating Officer Mike Agovino says "They have extremely large reach and if they promote the feature aggressively I would expect to see a significant jump in downloads and usage of the app. I don't think that their audience gains will necessarily come from Pandora. More likely this move just helps to grow the already growing online audio pie."

Everyone agrees that it's too early to declare winners and losers in the Internet listening game. Tunein.com CEO Bill Moore says "Online listening is still under 10% of all radio.  It?s a massive market, we are on the second batter in the first inning."

ABC's Steve Jones says ?It?s way too early to predict winners and losers in digital radio. One of the most important events was the Pandora IPO. It will be telling to see how the market values that company and, by implication, the other pure-play digital radio companies. (Pandora will begin trading today at $15.37). When you talk to some of these private pure-plays, they?re apprehensive. Pandora?s success could lift all boats. But, if the market is not supportive, broader vulnerabilities for online audio (such as royalties) could be exacerbated.  Still, these are early times and It?s still  very much a jump ball for everyone in this space.? ABC provides exclusive content for Slacker Radio.

In the recent past Clear Channel's Bob Pittman has called Pandora a "playlist on shuffle." Of course time will tell whether that characterization is correct or whether Pandora proves Pittman wrong. An example he's referenced is his experience with AOL's instant messenger, saying it was a successful product but they could never figure out a way to make it a business.

Slacker Radio CEO Jim Cady. "We would agree that Pandora is primarily a playlist generator, where you put in a song or artist and their algorithms produce a playlist that matches that criteria.  Our programming approach, radio practices, content offering and general philosophy is built very closely to that of broadcast radio and we believe that is a considerable benefit over the playlists that Pandora and others lean on for discovery.  It is very difficult to beat a well programmed radio station. Especially one that you, as a listener, can control - this is something we have built our entire service around.  We are very happy to employ some of the best radio programming talent to curate our stations and craft our experience, because radio is an art that does not translate to playlists."

Agovino says Clear Channel has another opportunity, perhaps the next generation of apps for the listener, "If I understand CC's execution correctly it sounds like this technology that comes from Thumbplay is not integrated with the their terrestrial brands. In other words, it's not a personalized Z100 or Kiss 108. If that's true, than I think they've missed the opportunity to take the value proposition to another level. I think a best of both worlds hybrid is the killer app."

For now, Pandora is the success story. They are the one making all the waves and everyone else is just sitting back watching how they do and what they do.

(6/27/2011 9:18:49 AM)
Clear Channel's willingness to take risks has kept the company on the cutting edge of change. It is "clear" that Bob Pittman is carrying on that tradition with the new iHeartradio App. as an answer to Pandora.

Of course, Clear Channel has the best possible promotional platform and the ability through its crowdsourcing efforts to discover and establish new artists both on air, on Web platforms and on other wireless applications.

No one can afford to be "risk averse" when dealing with the “sea changes” taking place in media. Clear Channel management and ownership are clearly placing a premium on vision.

(6/27/2011 5:29:04 AM)
But, I thought that radio is supposed to stop streaming, and put everything into the HD Radio basket. LOL!

Clear Channel's KCAD and KZRX Towers Collapse

The Dickinson Press says the two stations went off the air Wednesday evening when their broadcasting tower northeast of Dickinson collapsed after the ground beneath it shifted. The shifting took place on an anchor that pulled the tower down. ?There?s cracks up there and it almost kind of looks like an earthquake.? the Clear Channel business manager told the paper.

The incident is believed to have been caused by saturated soil. Parts of the tower landed on a nearby transmitter building, causing minor damage. The tower isn?t salvageable, since it broke into several parts on its way down, Glaser said. Jeff Glaser, Dickinson Clear Channel Radio business manager said ?There?s pieces all over the place. That thing is busted, bent, twisted, everything. It?s gone."
