His crusade to get an activated FM chip in every cell phone used in the United States continued yesterday, even on his company earnings conference call. Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan says he's meeting with the FCC next Friday, along with the NAB, to discuss the chip. "This is the right thing to do. I'm proud to have lead this charge. We are not asking for a mandate and we are in negotiations with the wireless carriers to have the chips turned on." Smulyan says this is an important issue because consumers will eventually be charged more for data they use on their phones and having an FM chip activated makes listening to local radio free for those consumers. The meeting with the FCC next week is closed to the press.
