Pandora Q2 Revenue Jumps 38%. Net Loss $11.7 Million

7-24-14

For the second quarter of 2014, Pandora's total revenue was $218.9 million, up 38 percent from Q2 2013. Advertising revenue was $177.3 million, an increase of  39 percent over 2013. Subscription and other revenue was $41.6 million, up 35 percent. Revenue generated from mobile is now $167.5 million up 51 percent from 2013 and now makes up 76 percent of Pandora's total ad revenue. Local advertising grew 144 percent in the quarter to $35.3 million. Pandora's (net) loss for the quarter was $11.7 million. The company also gave guidance for Q3 and expects revenue to come in between $235-$240 million which would be an increase of 39 percent over 2013.

(7/25/2014 11:44:03 AM)

I don't understand the fascination with Pandora. It is a losing business model.

Anyone can duplicate what they are doing. I am a former sicentific computer programmer for the military, and now general manager of a network of radio station. Duplicating and improving upon Pandora's framework would be easy.

This is not a business model that will be successful as it is far too easy to duplicate.

September L.A. Revenue Jumps 7.2%

10-15-13
That's according to the Southern California Broadcasters Association and Miller Kaplan. SCBA president, Thom Callahan said, ?September produced impressive growth for the L.A. radio market. This critical swing month showcased some great revenue performances from our member stations, which maximized both local and national spot and blew the doors off digital revenue.?

Callahan added, ?On a year-to-date basis, Miller Kaplan reports total revenue growth at 3.4 percent through September. However, our trend line during 3rd quarter 2013 reveals a 5.2 percent growth rate YTD for the same period. Simply put, Q3 was powerful and we see the same trend developing for Q4. While projected revenue from the Affordable Care Act has not met our initial expectations at this time, we are very encouraged by activity in the insurance category overall, as well as our 4th quarter activity in significant new business development, solid automotive spending, impressive sports billing from the Lakers and Clippers, big L.A. Dodgers playoff revenue, and the ?raw power of Southern California radio in Q4'.?

Radio One Radio Revenue Jumps 4.9%

5-9-13

Typically Radio One CEO Alfred Liggins hosts a lively, lengthy, and detailed monthly earnings conference call. Today that wasn't so. Despite a strong performance from the Radio One Radio division, only one analyst had a question for Liggins and the call was over in 17 minutes. Liggins is one of the few group heads that still takes live questions, as most others now only take questions by e-mail. Here's what he reported about Q1.

Radio One was up 4.9 percent over 2012 for the quarter with Houston, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. all strong-performing markets for the company. Detroit, Indy, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Richmond, and Raleigh did not perform as well. National revenue was up 13.5 percent and local was up 2.1 percent. Retail is the biggest category for Radio One making up 16 percent of overall revenue. Telecom is second at 14 percent.

Liggins also repeated what he's been saying for years, that radio is a a flat to slightly up business.

Way to go, Al. Keep it up.

Clear Channel Rev Jumps Thanks To Traffic

Clear Channel saw a 7% jump in Q3 revenue thanks to the recently purchased Westwood One traffic division. When you back out Westwood One, revenue was up 2% for the quarter. National revenue was also up, so when you read between the lines, it sounds like local advertising was either flat or down for the quarter. Of the $55 million revenue increase in the radio division, $41 million came from the traffic division and $13 million from national.

The national revenue increase was lead by restaurants, automotive, utilities, financial services and healthcare. The company also reported the 4th quarter looks flat compared to 2010, "bookings for the 4th quarter are challenged and visibility is limited."
