At a one-on-one Radio Show conversation with NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith, Republican FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell struck a deregulatory note. The FCC is currently looking into the state of journalism, and, although McDowell had warm words for Steven Waldman, who is writing the report, he said, "We have no jurisdiction regulating journalism, nor should we. And there is something called the First Amendment, which backs up your rights as broadcasters, and also journalists' rights." |

WBZ-AM/Boston is picked as Legendary Station of the Year, while Citadel's Scott Shannon is Network/Syndicated Personality of the Year. Bonneville's WTOP/Washington takes Major Market station onors, while KGO-AM/San Francisco's Ronn Owens wins the Marconi as Major Market Personality of the Year. |

The International Association of Audio Information Services, an organization that advocates audio-information services for blind and disabled people, is calling on Congress to support the NAB's proposal to mandate the placement of an FM chip in cell phones so that the devices can receive local radio. In doing so, the IAAIS becomes the first entity from outside radio to back the NAB's plan. |

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved a new digital format for the upcoming Integrated Public Alert and Warning System -- a.k.a. IPAWS -- designed to expand on EAS "by allowing emergency management officials to reach as many people as possible over as many communications devices as possible, such as radio, television, mobile phones, personal computers, and other communications devices." FEMA's apparently means that broadcasters have 180 days to make the switch. |

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, reportedly has failed to win enough support for a net neutrality proposal that would have given the FCC limited power to regulate broadband traffic, putting the ball back in the FCC's court. |

The Radio Television Digital News Foundation has received a two-year, $100,000 grant from the McCormick Foundation that will enable it to use all of its communication tools to train and inform its members about potential abuses of the First Amendment |
