It's ugly down in Birmingham. As Paul Finebaum sues Citadel (soon to be Cumulus) over a contract dispute that, according to Finebaum's side, was broken by the company, Finebaum claims some new rules have been placed on him. Tim Brando, who is syndicated by Yahoo Sports Radio, says he is no longer allowed to appear on Finebaum's show. Why? Because Cox just launched a competing sports station across the street and Brando is on their roster. That rule kind of makes sense doesn't it? Not according to Brando who took Cumulus (not Citadel) to the verbal woodshed on his show. And he did it with Finebaum on the phone, silently egging him on. The only problem with what took place on Brando's show is it's not true. Citadel Birmingham Market Manager Bill Thomas told Radio Ink Brando is allowed on the show.
Brando says Cumulus is being petty. "What I find very petty on the part of the new ownership is that they would not want me to come on their air. It's petty and small time. That's like saying Jay Leno cannot do a commercial with David Letterman. This comes down to petty middle mis-managers." Finebaum then said "I'm sueing the same people who are keeping you off my show. And the bottom line is I think this stinks. What they are doing is depriving an audience around the country of an opportunity to hear you because of our little street fight."
Finebaum is very popular and also has a regional network in addition to being on Citadel's (soon to be Cumulus) sports station in the market. There's no doubt if he can get out of his contract he'd find a job across the street at Cox. At the end of his show yesterday, Finebaum let Citadel (soon the be Cumulus) know what he thought about his current place of employment. He played David Allen Coe's "Take this job and shove it." That's not petty?
