The former WABC Program Director starts his new job today and he'll oversee the programming practices of all of spoken word English as VP/Director Spoken Word Format. Salem CEO Ed Atsinger told Radio Ink ?Phil Boyce is an icon in news talk radio. Few can match him for depth of experience and success in identifying and producing successful news talk personalities. His experience and skill set is a perfect match for Salem?s needs given our large number of owned and operated news talk stations, local and nationally syndicated talk personalities, and other specialty spoken word formatted stations. I have no doubt that Phil will be a tremendous resource and addition to the Salem team.?
We caught up with Boyce Thursday morning and spoke to him about his new job, the spoken word format, the New York City battle between CBS and Merlin and of the AM band is dead and gone. Here is that interview.
Salem Communications Radio Division President Dave Santrella said ?Phil Boyce brings an impressive pedigree to Salem and we are confident that our media platforms, our advertisers, our programmers and our listeners will all profit from his oversight. Phil?s track record is a testament to his abilities and we look forward to reaping the rewards of his talents to our mutual benefit.?
Boyce joins Salem after 3 years as President of Programming at Talk Radio Network. Boyce is known for his 14-year stint as Program Director of WABC in New York. During his time there, Boyce was named Vice President of News Talk Programming for ABC Radio and later Citadel. He is widely credited with hiring Sean Hannity in New York and taking his show into national syndication for ABC in 2001. Later he hired Mark Levin at WABC and took him into national syndication in 2006. Boyce left WABC in October of 2008 shortly after WABC hit a 5 share 12+ in New York (Arbitron PPM Sept. 2008), the highest share the station has achieved since going talk from rock in 1982. Before joining WABC, Boyce programmed WJR in Detroit where he hired morning man Paul W. Smith, and afternoon host Mitch Albom who are both still mainstays of the station, along with Hannity and Levin. Boyce has been awarded PD of the Year by R & R magazine, and was named one of the top 10 PD's of the year 10 straight years in Radio Ink.
