Rumor Mill Speculates About WFAN, WXKS-A Moving To FM
Heading To The FM?
A pair of possible AM-to-FM moves in major NORTHEAST markets has rumor mills grinding this week.
JERRY BARMASH at MEDIABISTRO's FISHBOWLNY.COM is speculating that CBS RADIO Sports WFAN-A/NEW YORK is "positioning itself for a dramatic dial switch to FM" that would displace AC WWFS (FRESH 102.7), basing the idea on talks with a "former CBS RADIO employee, who asked to remain anonymous." The move would be made for CBS to retain NEW YORK YANKEES radio rights, putting the club on FM and possibly retaining the NEW YORK METS for the AM side while fending off a bid on the YANKEES package by ESPN Sports WEPN-F (98.7 ESPN NEW YORK).
Meanwhile, since PHOENIX MEDIA announced its sale of Alternative WFNX/BOSTON to CLEAR CHANNEL, the market speculation has included talk that CLEAR CHANNEL Talk WXKS-A (TALK 1200) might launch a simulcast on the FM side, and the BOSTON PHOENIX has noted that the URL talk1017.com now redirects to the TALK 1200 web page. While the title of the page shows "TALK 101.7," the page's contents are the normal TALK 1200 logos and links. The transfer of control is expected at the end of JULY.
