Tapping In To Sports Talent

2-3-14
What are the keys to unlocking the power Sports radio personalities bring to the mic -- and to today's diverse multiple platforms? At Radio Ink's Sports Radio Conference, set for March 10-11 in San Diego, you can listen in as a panel of Sports radio veterans discuss how to tap the full potential of your valuable talent.

Does major league talent have to mean major league headaches? And how do you create real harmony between sales and programming in a way that benefits everyone? Led by Rick Scott of Rick Scott & Associates, these experts will offer real-life examples of how sales and programming are working together, and discuss how to coach top talent to even greater heights.

Rick Scott president and CEO of Rick Scott & Associates will moderate this panel. RSA is the country's premier Sports radio marketing and programming organization, with clients across North America and Europe and offering customized service in sales, programming, marketing, and management. Before founding Rick Scott & Associates, Scott directed KJR/Seattle's flip to Sports, including building an on-air staff. His programming and management background also includes KSFO/San Francisco, the Oakland A's, KINK/Portland, OR, KJR/Seattle, KGON/Portland, and WBOS/Boston. He spent 11 years as an on-air talent and host.

Panelists:
Jason Barrett, program director of KGMZ-FM (95.7 The Game), is a 17-plus-year veteran of the radio industry with a passion for programming, coaching, and developing talent. He's worked in various cities and formats, and produced local and network shows, been on the air, negotiated contracts, and managed budgets. Barrett's goal is to produce a body of work that will have him considered among the top programmers in the Sports radio format.

Bruce Gilbert is SVP/Sports operations for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment. In his 30-plus-year career Gilbert has led programming and operations at, among other stations, WVAF/Charleston, WV; WTAE & WVTY/Pittsburgh; and KTCK, KDBN, KLIF and KPLX/Dallas-Fort Worth. In 2003 he was named GM of the ESPN Radio Network, and in 2007, he became CEO of Red Zebra Broadcasting in DC. He returned to Dallas in 2010 as VP of News, Talk, and Sports programming for CBS Radio/Dallas, and in January 2013, Gilbert was named SVP of Sports operations for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, overseeing the Premiere-syndicated 24/7 Fox Sports Radio Network. He also serves as sports brand manager within the Clear Channel senior programming team.

Scott Masteller, senior director of ESPN Audio, started in sports media in 1991 as a baseball play-by-play broadcaster for the minor leagues in Wichita, KS. His entry into Sports radio was with WLAP/Lexington, KY, on-air in afternoons, doing play-by-play, and as program director. He moved on to other markets, including Salt Lake City in 1996 and Portland, OR, in 1997; in both cities he was PD and afternoon personality. He became PD of ESPN-FM in Dallas in 2001, launching the station in the market. He became senior director/radio content at ESPN?s Bristol, CT headquarters in 2006 and recently moved into his current post as senior director of ESPN Audio, with a focus on affiliated and syndicated content, talent coaching, and PD development.
