Entercom Scores Big Name for Board

3-6-14

You may not recognize the name but Mark LaNeve is a big deal, and he's just joined the Entercom Board of Directors. That's big for Entercom. Big for radio. LaNeve has a very impressive resume, having held very high positions in the automotive, insurance and advertising worlds. Entercom CEO  David Field surely hopes to tap into all of that knowledge and drive more revenue to radio. LaNeve is the Chief Operating Officer of WPP?s Global Team Ford, an agency that serves as the marketing and advertising partner to the Ford and Lincoln lines. Was Field thinking cash and DASH?

For sure LaNeve can advise Entercom on how to drive more automotive and insurance business to radio. Having held corporate positions with both Ford, GM and AllState LaNeve knows what those industries need from radio to move more cars and sell more insurance. As Chief Marketing Officer at Allstate, LaNeve lead the sales and marketing business and introduced the highly acclaimed ?Mayhem? campaign. As General Manager of the Cadillac brand for General Motors, he revived the Cadillac brand and was named ?Grand Marketer of the Year? by Brandweek magazine in 2003. In July of 2012 Fortune Magazine said LaNeve was a key player in the 2002 introduction of the Cadillac CTS sedan, "a model that provided a toehold for the brand's turnaround in the U.S. and he's extremely popular with GM dealers, many of whom also own Ford franchises." Before joining GM, LaNeve was CEO of Volvo Cars North America.

Radio Ink is told that LeNeve will have detailed knowledge of all the new technology and digital strategies that his automotive client has employed in the past, and what they'll need in the future, and possibly he can be a driver for Entercom to take advantage of every digital new media possible to help drive automotive sales.

Pandora Scores Big Advertisers For New Auto Platform

1-7-14

Pandora is rolling out an in-car advertising platform this month with BP, Ford Motor Company, State Farm, and Taco Bell. The company says advertisers will have the opportunity to reach car-bound audiences with audio spots that will run across the 130 vehicle models that include a native Pandora integration in addition to the more than 270 aftermarket automotive devices that feature the personalized radio service. The company will introduce listeners to the in-car advertising experience by delivering fewer audio ads than on any other Pandora platform.

Pandora, which today reported more than 76.2 million active monthly listeners and more than 1.58 billion listening hours across all platforms in December 2013, is currently available on nine out of the 10 best-selling passenger vehicles. More than 4 million unique users have activated Pandora through a native integration across the 23 major auto brands and eight aftermarket manufacturers on the company?s partner roster, representing an increase of 244 percent from the same time last year.

Pandora Chief Marketing Officer Simon Fleming-Wood said, ?Nearly half of all radio listening takes place in the car. We knew early on that to redefine radio, we would need to seamlessly deliver Pandora through in-dash entertainment systems. With an 8.6 percent share of total U.S. radio listening and unmatched growth and adoption of Pandora in the car, we are now seizing the opportunity to connect advertisers with a more targeted audience than traditional radio can provide.?

Ford Motor Company Digital Marketing Manager Erica Bigley said, ?As an innovation leader, we knew early on that a vibrant app ecosystem was essential to the success of our technology platform and with the vehicle as the traditional home of radio, we were the first to bring the personalized Pandora experience to customers via SYNC?AppLink?. This next partnership phase lets us effectively reach highly engaged customers where they are most likely to enjoy radio and is incredibly exciting for our business.?

State Farm Advertising Director Ed Gold said, ?State Farm was a Pandora early-adopter. People are passionate about their music and their cars. With so much music being consumed in the car, Pandora automotive platforms allow listeners to customize that experience and we are excited to be able to connect with consumers in that environment.?

Taco Bell Chief Marketing Officer Chris Brandt said, ?Taco Bell fans are passionate about music, and we want to continue to share moments of music exploration and discovery with them. We?ve already been able to reach fans by Pandora via their mobile devices, and now the latest in-car platform will allow us to reach them in their car during mealtime moments when our message is most relevant.?

Entravision Uses Facebook, Scores Big With Latino Rock Concert in L.A.

11-1-2012

One reason Entravision had a big 3rd quarter (see story below) was one of the company's most successful annual events. Entravision hosts one of the largest Latin music events in the United States. This year was the 14th year the concert was held and the first year the company incorporated Facebook in its strategy to sell tickets, according to Entravision CEO Walter Ulloa. It was also a record year for national sponsorships at the show which featured the most popular Latin Rock bands in the format who played to over 13,000 fans for over 6 hours at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Entravision incorporated its Facebook page by asking listeners to "like" them on the Social Media site. Listeners would then receive a pre-sale code for tickets to the show. Entravision sold half its tickets to the Staples Center concert via this Facebook promotion. The event was completely sold out in 6 hours. Major sponsorships were sold to Budweiser, McDonalds, AT&T and Toyota. Ulloa says it was a record year for sponsorships.

This year 12 million Latinos will vote according to Ulloa. That is a 25% increase in the total from 2008. In 2012 Entravision expects to generate $16 million in political advertising (including its Television properties), an increase of 107% from four years ago. Ulloa believes the Latino population may very well decide who sits in the White House when it's all said and done next week. The company has properties in Nevada, Colorado, Florida and Virginia. All are considered very important states in this election.

'Way' To Go: Bruno Mars Scores Longest-Leading Debut Adult Contemporary Hit

by Gary Trust  |   June 13, 2011 1:05 EDT

With a 20th week at No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart, Bruno Mars' "Just the Way You Are" becomes the longest-reigning debut single in the list's almost 50-year history.

The song bests the career-opening commands of Colbie Caillat's "Bubbly" (2008) and Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" (2006), each of which spent 19 weeks at No. 1.

("Way" marks Mars' debut song as a lead artist and his first to reach the Adult Contemporary chart. He previously charted on the Billboard Hot 100 as a featured vocalist on B.o.B's "Nothin' on You" (No. 1, two weeks) and Travie McCoy's "Billionaire" (No. 4) last year).

Here is a look at the longest-leading debut singles since the AC survey launched the week of July 17, 1961:

Weeks at No. 1, Title, Artist, Year(s)
20 weeks, "Just the Way You Are," Bruno Mars, 2011
19 weeks, "Bubbly," Colbie Caillat, 2008
19 weeks, "Bad Day," Daniel Powter, 2006
18 weeks, "Lonely No More," Rob Thomas, 2005-06
18 weeks, "Heaven," Los Lonely Boys, 2004-05

Before it reached the AC summit the week of Feb. 5, "Way" led Radio Songs (seven weeks), Adult Pop Songs (five), the Hot 100 (four), Pop Songs (three) and Digital Songs (two).

As "Way" makes AC chart history, follow-up "Grenade" bullets at No. 11 (after topping the Hot 100 for four weeks) and latest single "The Lazy Song" debuts at No. 30 (a week after reaching No. 4 on the Hot 100).

Mars' debut album "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 3 the week of Oct. 23, 2010, and has spent its first 35 weeks in the chart's top 40. The set has sold 1.1 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

All charts will be refreshed Thursday (June 16) on Billboard.com.
