What's Gorman's Streaming Venture All About?

2-19-2015

On Wednesday, legendary WMMS Program Director John Gorman announced his new local streaming venture in Cleveland,  oWOW. On first look and first listen, there is something uniquely different about this streaming venture. oWOW sounds like, and has the feel of, a radio station, not just another streaming startup. Radio Ink talked with John Gorman at length on Thursday about his new streaming venture, listen to Part 1 below.

Gorman doesn't pull any punches in describing his streaming startup, he begins our conversation not about the format of oWOW, but about why he believes this new business venture will succeed. Because of consolidation and the huge debt that saddles so many broadcasters, Gorman thinks his streaming venture is well suited for success in Cleveland. Gorman speaks at length about the disadvantages terrestrial radio endures, and he believes those disadvantages can be turned to his advantage at oWOW.

No one ever accused Gorman of not having an opinion, and he doesn't hold back in the Radio Ink interview. Squarely in his sights: voice tracking, consolidation, debt, the lack of competition among broadcasters, and he's got his sights set on taking a share of the Cleveland radio advertising budget. Gorman says that his sales folks will be hitting the streets and working hard to take accounts away from local radio. But Gorman notes that oWOW will not be saddled with huge spot loads, because, as he put it, he doesn't have to. His budget is smaller and he's not bogged down with debt, network spots, and trade.

Gorman spends most of the first part of our interview, not discussing oWOW programming, but discussing how the streamer will be focusing on its business. Budweiser is already on their account list and Gorman is targeting focused and unique campaigns for its advertisers, not volume. Gorman also covers how he raised the money for oWOW, his investors, why his dayparts are different from terrestrial, how he plans on delivering a more unique product than either Pandora or Spotify, and much more. Listen to Part 1 of our exclusive interview below:

(SOCIAL) Be The Ball!

2-16-2015

If you want to effectively use social media for your radio brand, you should really consider playing a game I call ?Be the Ball.?

Here is how ?Be the Ball? works:

1. Spend some time looking at trending on Twitter and then reviewing what is happening in your market. Try to ?lean forward? into capturing the now of what is on the hearts and minds of listeners you most want to target.
2. Try get in front of the parade of trending content. Do this with photos, video, questions for listeners to comment on, etc., so that you encourage those most wanting influence (or to be validated).

As always, use lots of photos and/or videos. Make sure that you think carefully about headlines and the kinds of questions you may ask listeners to comment on in your posts. I also recommend that you ?twist? all content toward products you own (your online site or on-air). Facebook and Twitter need no help from us and pay us nothing to help them anyway. Our jobs are to increase ratings and participation. To twist content, you simply think of innovative ways to provide something about the stories that put your station, your website, your personalities in the center, or near the center, of the story (at least ?how it ends?).

A word of warning:  Always do your research and make sure you know where the ball is going. You want to make sure that a fair amount of your posts are running through the ?now? current of conversation.

Yes, that?s the whole list of guidelines. No matter what format the station is where you work, you can truly get in front of the trending parade in some of your online and social media.

If you have a social media content strategy that balances high passions of local listeners, rotates in and out a variety of interesting content, visuals, and opportunities for listeners to comment along with ?being the ball,? you will be a winner for sure.

Good luck!

(TRIBUTE) Mentoring Lessons From David Carr

2-18-2015

By Buzz Knight

Mentoring comes in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it is completely warm and fuzzy and it follows an easy path. In other moments it can be hard to figure out. It can even misinterpreted as rude.

With the recent death of the extraordinary New York Times writer David Carr, it's important for all of us who are around a business we love to consider the importance of our role in mentoring.

I love many of the lines in the New York Times article of Monday, February 16, regarding his legacy -- some of which are in his own words. In addition to writing for the Times about the changing media landscape, David had also joined the faculty at the Boston University communications school where he passionately taught journalism. David was driven to help prepare the next generation of journalists for the real world.

David was interested in people, not their resumes, and he could be blunt, humble, and unique, among other things.

David Carr understood the ability to reach audiences and the importance of clear communication -- and isn't that critical to our future and how we prepare our next generation?

As we hope for a generation that will care about our business we must take stock of David Carr's mentoring traits. He was known at the Times as a "supreme talent scout," but someone who could be blunt in his criticism of the next generation he was grooming.

More from the article: "He hates suck-ups, people who treat waitresses and cab drivers poorly, and anybody who thinks diversity is just an academic conceit. He is a big sucker for the hard worker and is rarely dazzled by brilliance."

How we learn from David's mentoring of journalism students at Boston University is up to our own analysis and implementation. Taking interest in the next generation and embracing their questions is an excellent starting point. It certainly can and should go further vis-a-vis how we approach the mentoring process. Asking the next generation questions, and actually listening to their perspectives, speaks volumes.

We should all value the mentoring process and learn from a master of that process in David Carr.

WBZZ PMD Jock Flick Homeless Again

2-17-2015

Last year 100.7 Star partnered with The Salvation Army to bring awareness to homelessness in Pittsburgh by having afternoon co-host Flick live in a 4x8-foot plexiglass box downtown for three days. Flick is doing it again this year near the MassMutual Pittsburgh Ice Rink in downtown Pittsburgh.

Flick will once again be experiencing some of the hardships of living homeless. The afternoon host will have minimal shelter and heat, and the same food provided to the homeless by The Salvation Army. Flick comments on the promotion,  "Living in a four-foot-by-eight-foot plexiglas box 12 hours a day and staying in a homeless shelter at night was not easy, but it's nothing compared to challenges that people who are actually homeless face day in and day out.  If doing this for three days again this year helps to educate and inspire more people to help, it's more than worth it."

(SALES) The Radio Candle Shop

2-13-2015

We all know there are different types of buyers and buyer styles in every business category. You can see this in the way candles are marketed.

The other day, I made a call with one of my station client's salespeople on a unique little candle boutique, way off the retail beaten path. My clients know I love going on calls, because all three parties -- me, the radio account executive, and the advertiser -- always learn something.

That's all this specialty shop sold was candles, and accessories for candles, and they?ve had to expand their countryside real estate three times in recent years to keep up with demand.I am certainly not a candle aficionado, but I know my wife buys candles at the one-stop shops that sell everything from aspirins to groceries and from cutlery to candles.

But here is the thing. The candles I saw at the candle boutique were selling for 10 and 20 times what Angela pays at the one-stop shops.

It made me think about radio's business models. Sure there are buyers for one-stop media shops; radio stations that offer everything from radio "clusters" to Web banners, and from SEO to print, special events, and more. But what about a radio specialty shop? A radio station that did radio so well, some buyers would be willing to pay more for their advertising? A radio specialty shop that would be a pleasure to work with, would generate superior results, and that advertisers would seek out.

A radio specialty shop could also sell radio accessories. Accessories like superior creative, listener and customer research, musical identity packages, and superior service.

There is most certainly a market for one-stop media companies, where stations can do a good job at everything, but not a great job at anything?what?s the old expression, "A jack of all trades, but master of none."
It seems to me, however, there is also room for a radio specialty shop; one with superior craftsman that deliver a superior product for which they can charge a premium. I, for one, think it might be more fun to work there.

I suspect you already know, Wayne, that any station that would aspire to such a lofty position would, first, have to re-create, staff and train its Creative Department.

Fat chance! sez I,
But still - right on the money.

2-17-2015

With just over 43,000 spots, Geico held the title as the number one radio advertiser again this week in the Media Monitors report. Walgreens jumps from number eight to the second-biggest radio advertiser with just under 40,000 spots. Number three is Verizon Wireless with just over 32,000 commercials. One interesting note in this week's report is that four of the top 10 advertisers on radio this week were wireless providers. AutoZone and Home Depot round out the Top 5 with just just over 28,000 and just under 25,000 respectively.
