Auto Sales Boom In December

12-29-14

In what is typically known primarily as a retail month, radio's number-one category, automotive, had an outstanding showing. TrueCar is forecasting 1.5 million new vehicles will be sold in December, making it the 4th-biggest month of the year. What makes this good news even better is that December has only four weekends rather than five, so dealers stuffed more sales into a shorter selling cycle. May was the biggest month of 2014 with 1.6 million vehicles sold. That was followed by August's 1.59 million. In March, 1.54 million new vehicles were sold. SBS Gets Nasdaq Notice

Spanish Broadcasting System says in a 8-k filing that it has received a warning from Nasdaq that its Class A common stock has fallen below the minimum of $15 million for continued listing. SBS has 180 days to get back into compliance -- until June 17, 2015.

If the market value of the shares closes above $15 million for at least 10 consecutive days before that date, SBS will be back in compliance. If the company isn't able to do that, it will receive another notice saying it is subject to Nasdaq delisting. SBS would be able to appeal such a notice.

How to Fix What's Wrong With Management?

12-22-14
A Japanese company and a United States company decided to have a canoe race on the St. Lawrence River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race. On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile. The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. How does this relate to radio? Let me explain.

A team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action. Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing. So, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion.

They advised that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

To prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team?s management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager. They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder.

It was called the ?Rowing Team Quality First Program?, with meetings, dinners and free pens to the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices, and bonuses.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles. Humiliated the American management laid off the rowers for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles and cancelled all capital investments in new equipment. The money saved was distributed to senior executives as bonuses and next year?s racing team was outsourced to China.

I found that on a website called tickld, in their section called ?funny.? Sadly what?s funny about it is that we all can relate. We all have a story about some management misstep that we?ve made, or that we have experienced from others. How you manage and coach your team clearly has a significant impact on their development.

We think of Vince Lombardi or Phil Jackson as coaching giants. But YOU can become a coaching giant to every member of your sales team. Unlock your sales team?s potential by doing more coaching than training.

Coaching works better than training in many situations.  Master the art of coaching and you can take ?putting out fires? off your job description. If you find out exactly how to get into your salespeople's heads, you can influence their thinking and their behavior.

Shared this with your managers:

It?s Christmas week. As my gift to Radio Ink readers, I would like to provide you with a free copy of a one-hour webinar on this topic, complete with the slide deck and all the resources and tools we shared with our managers.  Just shoot me an email and I will send you the link.  It?s been my honor to be with you every week sharing ideas and engaging in discussions about sales and sales management. Creating a better sales team, generating greater revenue, and having your best year ever starts with a commitment to grow your skills. This free gift can help.

You?ve no doubt already ?set your course? for 2015 and determined where you want to go. Knowing where you?re headed is the first step to getting there. Equally important is knowing how many rowers you need and how to get the maximum performance out of your rowing team.

Merry Christmas!

Morning Man Faces Deportation

12-30-14

KLKK-FM (103.7 The Fox) morning man James Shaman (pictured), has been speaking out a lot lately about immigration reform. He's facing deportation himself. Shaman is scheduled to appear at a hearing on his immigration status and whether or not he'll be deported back to Canada. When he was young, Shaman broke the law and because of this, he has a criminal record. Shamantells KIMT TV that up until only three years ago, his legal status was protected by a permanent residential visa. With his criminal record, his green card was rescinded and he was placed on parole legal status. KLKK, located in North Iowa, is owned by North Iowa Broadcasting.
Shaman said, ?There?s a whole lot more to immigration and I?m not the only one that?s dealing with this. I don?t even think I?m the only person in north Iowa dealing with this, there may be others. I consider myself rather fortunate that I have the means to speak aloud with my microphone and my radio station and let people hear about this.?

His daughter was controlling the decisions at the time, and when he perished, his wife, Jeannie, was never given any sort of explanation. Research Director, Inc. Presents Exclusive Dec. PPM Analysis For Detroit, Miami, Seattle, Phoenix And Minneapolis

PPManalysis2012.jpg

Last Analysis Of The Year

Those last minutes before the holiday season. Rushing around for that special stocking stuffer. Wrapping the presents with care. Making sure all the logs are done through MONDAY. Oh, and looking at the DECEMBER ratings. Nothing like a radio CHRISTMAS.

The Ratings Expert elves at the RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INC. workshop, along with our helpers at XTRENDS, bring you one final analysis for the holidays. This one covers NOVEMBER 6th through DECEMBER 3rd and, as we have seen in our previous episodes, was heavily laced with some performance-enhancing music.  Let’s see if that trend continues …

DETROIT: Christmas Came Early

It happens every year. No sooner have you doled out the last of your HALLOWEEN candy and -- bam -- all the displays feature tinsel and red felt. Not to be outdone by this pre-mature celebration, iHEARTMEDIA AC WNIC flipped to Yule tunes at the very beginning of the survey. While we do not examine the weeklies, the end result was that the station moved from a tie at #11 to the top spot and more than doubled its share (4.3-9.6). This was just a bit behind last year’s 9.8 share. iHEARTMEDIA Urban AC WMXD (MIX) had a decent book (6.6-6.8) but could not withstand the march of the wooden soldiers as it dropped back to #2. Much to the wondering eyes of fans everywhere, the LIONS have yet to blow their season. This helped CBS RADIO Sports WXYT-F (THE TICKET) remain in the #3 slot (6.3-6.1). CBS RADIO News WWJ-A reported a smaller number this time (6.4-6.0) as it slipped back two spots to #4. CBS RADIO Classic Hits WOMC dropped to #5 with its lowest share since SANTA’s previous visit (5.9-5.6). CUMULUS Talk WJR-A slid down one rung, out of the top five (5.7-5.0).

It was not quite a worst-to-first performance but WNIC did climb from #13 to #1 25-54 in just four short weeks.  Again, the station more than doubled its previous share and was ahead of last year’s pace. WXYT-F was off a smidge as it melted back to #2 while WMXD remained at #3 with a slight uptick. A couple of stations on different tracks met up at #4. iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M WKQI (CHANNEL 955) was up from #5 just by maintaining share while GREATER MEDIA Active Rock WRIF fell from #2 with its lowest share since JULY. CBS RADIO Country WYCD dropped four places to #8 thanks to its smallest number in over a year.

Over the last year, two events were strong enough to prevent WKQI from being #1 18-34. Those were TIGERS baseball and Jingle Bell Rock. The former was not in play while the latter was not quite up to the task as WKQI remained on top.  iHEARTMEDIA Urban WJLB remained at #2 with a slight loss of share. Coming in at #3 -- all the way from #7 -- was your holiday leader WNIC. It did not double its number here and was actually three shares leaner than last year. Last month’s #3 duo went their separate ways a little further down the chart. WRIF ended up at #4 while WXYT-F dropped to #5 with its lowest point total since APRIL. WYCD slipped to #6 with its smallest share in over a year.

The snow was glistening 18-49 for WNIC as it moved from #8 to #1 with a huge share increase. As large as it was, it was not quite as robust as last DECEMBERs. WKQI was up slightly to remain at #2 while WXYT-F slid back to #3. WJLB was off a touch while remaining at #4. WRIF took a tumble as it dropped from #1 to #5 thanks to its lowest share since AUGUST.

MIAMI-FT.LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD: Too Hot For Caroling

Once again, SANTA chose not to take his talents to SOUTH BEACH. So, this is one of the few markets that remained “normal.” For the last couple of books we wondered if the reign of COX RADIO Urban AC WHQT (HOT) was showing signs of fatigue. Its once-commanding lead had dwindled to less than a share for the last two months and people were talking. They can stop that now because HOT had its best book since, ironically, the last time SANTA wasn’t in town (7.8-9.1) and put some distance between it and the rest of the field. LINCOLN AC WLYF (LITE) remained a solid #2 (7.2-7.0) while UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary WAMR (AMOR) remained firmly entrenched at #3 (5.8-5.8). The other two perennial residents of the top five were hanging out at #4. COX RADIO AC WFEZ (EASY) moved up a slot (4.8-4.9) while iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M WHYI (Y100) remained in place (5.2-4.9)

Perhaps the reason why so many tongues were wagging over the fate of WHQT was the fact that it spent the last three books in a spot other than #1 25-54. That dubious streak came to an end as the station returned to the top with its best performance since JULY. WLYF slipped back to #2 with its lowest share since AUGUST while WHYI took a step back to #3 after losing a chunk of share. WAMR was still #4 as it was flat from last month. The tie at #5 was broken. WFEZ claimed sole ownership of the position with a slight increase while CBS RADIO Top 40/R WPOW (POWER) fell back to #6. Coming up on the rail was SBS Tropical WXDJ (EL ZOL), which rose from a tie at #12 to #7 with its best showing since AUGUST.

Last month, two stations were branded co-leaders 18-34. That label was apparently a tempo tattoo as COX RADIO Urban WEDR surged into the lead, moving up two spots with its best book since JULY. WPOW lost a chunk of share as it dropped back to #2 while WHYI’s loss was even chunkier as it ended up at #3. iHEARTMEDIA Urban WMIB (THE BEAT) was steady at #4 with a very small decrease. The two stations that were sharing space at #5 last month parted ways. WHQT retained possession with its best book in over a year while iHEARTMEDIA Spanish Contemporary WMGE (MEGA) slid back to #6 even though it had a solid increase.

For the first time in well over a year WHQT was #1 18-49. This is a pretty volatile demo as often we see large share changes resulting in small rank movements. In this case, however, HOT ascended the throne from #5 and posted its biggest book in over a year.  Last month’s leader – WHYI – was off a bit as it dropped back to #2.  WPOW was also off a bit but remained at #3.  WEDR was flat and happy at #4 while WLYF dropped three places to #5 with its smallest total since JULY.

SEATTLE-TACOMA: It’s Warm By The Fire

In many of the markets released so far, the impact of the jingling bells produced some instant and dramatic results.  In the case of HUBBARD AC KRWM (WARM), the result was certainly instantaneous -- the station flipped at the beginning of week #3 -- but not nearly as dramatic as some other markets we’ve seen.  The station rose to the top from a tie at #4 (4.9-6.2) but that wasn’t quite up to last year’s lofty 7.5 share. HUBBARD Top 40/M KQMV (MOVIN) saw its five-book winning streak come to an end as it acquired its lowest share since JUNE (6.2-6.0) and slid back to #2.  #3 BONNEVILLE Talk KIRO-F continued to ride the wave of the twelve fans a-clapping, though it was off from last month’s big number (5.7-5.0). ENTERCOM Active Rock KISW fell a spot to #4 with its smallest share since AUGUST (5.2-4.9). ENTERCOM Country KKWF (THE WOLF) was probably hungry for some venison as it posted its lowest number since JUNE (4.9-4.7).

The script certainly was not followed in the 25-54 demo as it appeared that mistletoe did not have its desired effect.  There were actually two stations that flipped the switch. KRWM certainly added share but only moved up one spot to #8.  Last year, the magic moved the station to #2. CRISTA Christian Contemporary KCMS (SPIRIT) also changed its tune but not until the last few days of the survey. The station did rise two spots to #3 with its best book since the last time the angels were heard on high. For those stations sticking to regular programming, KQMV moved back to #1 despite grabbing its lowest number since AUGUST.  KISW fell back to #2 with its smallest share since JULY. Two stations collided head on at #4. KKWF clawed its way up from #5 while KIRO-F slid from #3. Two other stations dropped out of the top five altogether. CBS RADIO Adult Hits KJAQ (JACK) was feeling a bit frosty as it dropped to a tie at #6 with a flat book.
It was joined by cluster brother CBS RADIO Classic Rock KZOK, which fell from #4.

The top five 18-34 remained unchanged in both order and composition from last month. Despite landing its lowest number since JULY, KQMV continued to dominate the demo. KISW also had its lowest share since JULY to remain at #2. ENTERCOM Alternative KNDD (THE END) rested at #3 with its best showing since JULY. KKWF was off slightly at #4 while KJAQ was up a skosh at #5. KRWM did improve from a tie at #9 to #6 but a year ago the station was three shares larger and sitting at #2.

The top two 18-49 players continued to distance themselves from the rest of the field. KQMV was flat but #1 for the eighth book in a row while KISW was off a bit at #2. KCMS had its best share in over a year -- for the second month in a row -- to move up a spot to #3. This forced KKWF to tuck its tail between its legs and slink back to #4 even though it was flat for the second straight survey. KJAQ remained at #5 with a slight decrease. KRWM did ride the reins from #10 into a tie at #6 but was well off last year’s pace when it was #2.

PHOENIX: Trim The Cactus Time

Though there is no official hall of records for this sort of thing (and there should be) -- consensus is that iHEARTMEDIA AC KESZ (99.9KEZ) was the initial perpetrator of this holly, jolly format thing. Not that this sort of credit matters to the station’s listeners. Clearly, they liked it as the station rose from a tie at #5 to #1 (4.6-7.8).  Last year at this time the station was also #1 but with an 8.9 share. iHEARTMEDIA Talk KFYI-A remained at #2 but posted its best number in over a year (5.1-5.3). As recently as JUNE the station was tied at #12 with a 3.2 share so it has been on quite the roll lately. iHEARTMEDIA Hot AC KMXP (MIX) ended a two-book slide (4.7-5.1) as it moved up to #3. CBS RADIO Classic Hits KOOL may have suffered from too much egg nog as it dropped into a tie at #4, landing its lowest share since FEBRUARY (5.7-5.0), which ended its five-book run at #1. HUBBARD Classic Rock KSLX landed its best book since MAY (4.5-5.0) as it rose three places to that previously mentioned tie at #4. Two stations vacated the top-five  premises.  HUBBARD Active Rock KUPD fell three spots to #6 (5.0-4.8) while iHEARTMEDIA Country KNIX fell two spots to #7 with its lowest share (4.6-4.2) since the last time cowboys were roping reindeer.

The folks at KUPD are likely saying “I got your SANTA right here, pal” as the station posted its best 25-54 number in over a year to claim the top spot for the sixth month in a row. However, KESZ was nipping at KUPD’s nose as it rose five places to #2. While it was a strong showing, it was over two shares weaker than last year when the station was #1.  KSLX had its best book since MAY but had to be content to remain at #3. KNIX slipped a couple of spots to #4 because, frankly, it had a down book. iHEARTMEDIA Adult Hits KYOT (THE MOUNTAIN) remained firmly in place at #5 with a modest increase. iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KZZP (KISS) was off for the second straight book and slid two places to #6.

Back in APRIL KUPD snatched up the reins to the 18-34 sleigh and has yet to let it go (let it goooo … sorry). It accomplished this despite posting its lowest share since JUNE. Two stations powered up the chart to lay claim to the coveted #2 position. KMXP rose from a tie at #5 with its best share since JULY. KESZ used the power of the CLAUS to advance from #13 though it was two shares lighter than a year ago. RIVIERA Top 40/R KKFR (POWER) dropped a spot to #4 even though it was up for the second book in a row while KZZP dropped three places to #5 with its lowest share since AUGUST. Two stations were forcibly removed from the top five. CBS RADIO Top 40/M KZON (LIVE 101.5) fell three places to #6 while ENTRAVISION Regional Mexican KLNZ (LA TRICOLOR) dropped three spots to #8.

There was a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on 18-49 this book. KUPD was #1 for the sixth consecutive survey. KESZ made a big move as it climbed from #14 to #2. As seen in the previous demos, this year’s pine-scented number is well off last year’s. KNIX fell back to #3 by a hair. Two stations settled in for their long winter’s nap at #4. KMXP moved up from a tie at #5 with a solid increase while KSLX rose from #9 with its best showing in over a year. Through a weird quirk of math, there were actually eight stations in the top five last month.  With two stations moving in, there were actually five that moved out. RIVIERA Hot AC KMVA (HOT) fell from #4 to #6 despite being up for the second book in a row.  KZZP fell four spots to #7 with its smallest showing in over a year. There was a four-way tie at #5 last month and three exited. KYOT ended up at #8 despite a small increase. KZON fell to #10 where it was joined by CBS RADIO Country KMLE, which had its lowest total since MARCH.

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL: I Heart Ratings

We’ll get to the effect that all that dashing and prancing had on the market in a moment. The big story coming out of the TWIN CITIES was that iHEARTMEDIA owned the top four positions 6+.  As is always the case, iHEARTMEDIA Top 40/M KDWB was #1 by a wide margin (9.3-9.0). The official station of the NORTH POLE was iHEARTMEDIA Classic Hits KQQL (KOOL), which made the move in the early stages of week #3. A good move it was as the station went from #7 to #2 (6.1-7.7).  This was a vast improvement over last year when the station had a 6.6 share and was ranked at #5. iHEARTMEDIA Country KEEY (K-102) moved up a spot to #3 with its highest share since JUNE (6.4-7.4). iHEARTMEDIA Sports KFXN (K-FAN) rounded out the cluster sweep. It slid back to #4 even though it was up for the sixth book in a row (6.5-6.7). HUBBARD Hot AC KSTP (KS95) had its smallest showing since the last time things were said many times, many ways (6.8-6.6) as it slid down the chimney three spots to #5.  CUMULUS Classic Rock KQRS – which was #1 in AUGUST – had its tiniest number in over a year (6.4-5.9) as it plunged three places to #7.

For the fourth book in a row, KDWB was #1 25-54 and held a two-plus share lead over #2 KFXN, which had its best book in over a year. KSTP was flat and immobile at #3. SANTA’s helper -- KQQL -- moved up from #7 into a tie at #4. While this year’s number was a share over last DECEMBER, the station had better non-Yule books throughout 2014. KQRS was also at #4 -- no change from last time. The station has been on a bit of a downward spiral since it hit #1 for two months in a row back in JULY and AUGUST. CBS RADIO Adult Hits KZJK (JACK) dropped two places to a tie at #7 even though its number remained the same.

KDWB had its best 18-34 book since APRIL and that is saying something since the station routinely scores large, double-digit shares. CUMULUS Active Rock KXXR (93X) remained a distant #2 but did post its lowest total in over a year.  This allowed CBS RADIO Country KMNB (BUZ’N) to creep a little bit closer at #3. What is interesting to note is that a year ago the station was #2 with a double-digit share. KSTP dropped back to #4 as it was off for the second straight book while KEEY moved up to #5 as it rebounded from its lowest share of the year. KZJK slid back to a tie at #6 with its smallest showing since JANUARY while KQQL moved up three spots to a tie at #9. That may sound modest but the share increase was healthy.

KDWB was #1 -- again -- 18-49 with another double-digit performance, its best since APRIL. Take that, SANTA.  KSTP was flat but allowed to move forward one square to #2. They were going into overtime at #3. KFXN moved up from #4 with its best score in over a year while KXXR dropped from #2. KMNB was down for the third straight book. Normally that’s a buzz kill (hey, we’re here all week …) but the station did move up in the world to #5. KZJK was off again, riding its lowest share since JANUARY down two spots to a tie at #6. KQQL moved from #12 to #9. Last year it was a full share lighter at #10.

This concludes our broadcast day. Thank you for taking the time to slog through this with us. Given the hour we close with ... MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR from The Ratings Experts at RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INC. Travel safe.

North Carolina AM Sold

aasalesc2013.jpg

Sold

ROWAN MEDIA INC. is selling News-Talk WSTP-A/SALISBURY, NC to WILLIAM MARC GRAHAM's 2B PRODUCTIONS, LLC for $236,000 ($201,000 in a 96-month promissory note).  The station's real property is being sold by TIMOTHY H. COATES and LISA B. COATES to STATESVILLE BLVD. LLC for $75,000 plus cancellation by NEWBRIDGE BANK of a secured loan.

In another filing with the FCC, VIC MICHAEL's CEDAR COVE BROADCASTING, INC. is requesting an extension of its Silent STA for KIHI/BURNS, WY while it makes repairs to its transmission system.

And low-power FM construction permits have been granted to:

ONLINE JOURNALISM PROJECT, INC., NEW HAVEN, CTNESKAYA, FRANCONIA, NHIGLESIA CASA DE MILAGROS, SEATTLE, WAPEQUENAS LIGAS HISPANAS DE NEW HAVEN INC., NEW HAVEN, CT

The Commission also denied JACKSONVILLE STATE UNIVERSITY's Application for Review of the grant of a new noncommercial educational FM to ANNISTON SEVENTH-DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH at ANNISTON, AL over its mutually exclusive application for the same community. The winning applicant was initially rejected for failing to satisfy the "third test" for channel reservation, under which "an applicant must propose to provide a first or second NCE service to at least 10% of the population within the proposed station’s service area and this first or second NCE service must reach at least 2,000 people."

After the rejection, ASDA filed for reconsideration and added a technical amendment to cure the deficiency, and the Media Bureau granted the application. JSU contended that the Bureau should not have permitted ASDA to cure its application because the Bureau, contrary to its ruling, had given notice that such a curative application would not be permitted, but the Bureau disagreed, saying that it had never addressed whether the third filing standard would serve as a minimum filing requirement.

The Radio Versus Digital Myth

12-22-14
We?re hearing a lot about digital cutting into radio advertising budgets?.but does that need to be the case? According to a survey by technology research firm Gartner Inc., sixty-eight percent of senior marketing executives said that their company had a separate digital marketing budget. According to the survey, marketing executives are three times more likely to lead strategic growth initiatives in 2016 than they were in 2012.

So let?s think about this. If digital marketing is all about growth initiatives, of course marketing executives can justify new and separate budgets for digital. If you have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hire a sales person who can guarantee to increase your sales dramatically, do you cut budget elsewhere or reduce your sales support staff to pay for that growth opportunity?

Of course not. If a new sales person, or digital initiatives, really can increase sales, those initiatives are paid for out of that growth!  And when C.D.s became popular, did consumers replace their car radios with CD players, or did they find extra budget to add the CD option? Where there is perceived benefit, we can always find more budget.

A Forbes magazine article about the Gartner survey said ?Changing market dynamics, an empowered buyer, channel proliferation and a connected economy open up a wealth of strategic growth opportunities for organizations in every sector.?

Who wouldn?t invest more budget in growth? The article said ?For marketers in 2015, it?s less about digital marketing than marketing in a digital world. Hence, marketers manage a much more balanced and integrated marketing mix than in previous years.? It?s time for you to spread the word that digital doesn?t replace broadcast, but rather is a component in an integrated marketing mix to increase the sales.

Wayne Ens is president of ENS Media Inc., a marketing consulting company that trains radio sales people and local advertisers why radio deserves a bigger share of marketing budgets in the new media economy.

Pandora: Turtles Threatening Free Speech

12-22-14

Internet pure-play streamer Pandora has responded to the Turtles. GIGAOM reports the company claims that lawsuits filed by the former members of the Turtles amount to an illegal restriction on the freedom of speech and filed an anti-SLAPP motion in L.A. this past Friday.

SLAPP stands for Strategic Litigation Against Public Participation; it's a law that provides defendants a fast process to challenge lawsuits that they believe threaten free expression. Turtles founding members Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman -- who have also performed as Flo & Eddie -- are coming after Pandora, claiming they are owed money for pre-1972 recordings. There is no federal law protecting recordings before 1972, so the two men are trying to use state laws to win their case.

(12/23/2014 11:01:32 AM)
I'm sorry, but that's a real stretch, and I'm sure that it will go just as far as Aereo TV's claims (before they were shut down.)

6 Ideas To Improve Your Social Media Strategy

6 Ideas That Will Improve Your Social Media Strategy

(by Loyd Ford) Ever had your mother or someone like her say, ?Get real!?  We live in a fast-paced world where most companies are trying to figure out how to deliver something that looks like and feels like good old fashion whatever their product or service is?but with less cost.  The end result is often an experience that doesn?t feel real because it often isn?t. When you dip over into social media for real brands and people, things often get even less real.  But being real matters more than ever and communicating the realities about how much you care for your local listeners is more valuable than ever. That means communicating those values on-air and in social media along with appearances and even advertising or marketing about your brand.

As we approach 2015, now is a great time to think about what does create that feeling of realness.  #1 on my list is authenticity.  But how do you create that feeling in your social media? Isn?t social media fake?  Not necessarily. In fact, as we take a look at the social media space you occupy, let?s focus in on authenticity and being real.  How can you make sure you are communicating those values to your audience in social media like you do on-air.

1. Put yourself ?out there? by putting personal stories out there about you, your personalities and what makes you vulnerable (within reason).  Don?t simply post national stories that can appear anywhere.  When you do post national stories, give them an authentic local twist that makes your station and your audience a part of the story.

2. Engage your audience in responding directly to your social media content.  Make it as much about them (or more) than it is about you and your reaction to what may be ?happening? out there in the world.

3. When you don?t know the answer to something, put it out there for listeners to answer.  People love to see that you don?t have all the answers and they love to be helpful.  This makes you very real and acceptable.

4. Talk about real world things that impact you and impact your listeners and make your social media conversations about real issues that are important to them (not just contesting and gossip).

5. Let it all hang out.  Sometimes you can show a ?behind the scenes? without makeup or an event ?set up? so people can see the work that goes into doing radio.  You will be surprised how far that can go to making you seem more approachable and engaged in real world things.

6. Admit to making mistakes.  Show that you are just like listeners.  If you do it right, you will draw more people to you because they will see you as very real and ?more like them.?

All of this is about humanizing your personalities and your work.  The more human and approachable you seem, the more you will find people identifying with you.  The pressure to be perfect is more present than you might think.  Identifying yourself as someone who tries hard, is sometimes wrong, makes choices based on trying to serve others and believes in helping listeners on a very authentic level will create more attraction to you.  That?s worth the work.

FCC: Saying Redskins on The Radio is Not Indecent

9-18-14

Every argument Public Interest Law Professor John Banzhaf made to try to block Red Zebra's WWXX's license renewal was rejected by the commission. Banzhaf argued use of the word "Redskins," during Washington Redskins football games (which WWXX in Virginia carries) was profane, obscene, indecent, hate speech, and causes psychological harm not only to Indian and non-Indian children, but also to Indian adults. He also claimed the owners of Red Zebra lacked the character qualifications required of a commission licensee.

Every point was rejected, with specific examples of how Benzhaf either didn't prove his argument or mischaracterized previous case law.  Read the entire FCC ruling HERE

So it's okay to say:
White folks, honkies, whitey, crackers, just so long as it brings in profit...the fcc is wack to allow it...
the term redskins does not refer to a skin color, it refers to the scalp of an indigenous person, which was worth about $200. a form of genocide and eradication of a first nations people sponsored by the so called u.s. gov't. no! it is not ok to use the word redskin!
(12/19/2014 8:40:52 AM)
Put your public files on-line and we'll all have complaints to our licenses like this.
I really think the Redskins should just choose a new name and be done with this. How about Foreskins?

What do you call a thousand Lawyers chained to the bottom of the Ocean? A Start. He's the reason people tell jokes like that about layers.
I think Mother Theresa would want to punch this guy in the face.

Radio's Mr. Fabulous Bill Burton Dies at 85

It's a sad day for the radio industry. Radio?s number one ambassador has passed away at the age of 85. Burton died as a result of head injuries suffered from a fall at home on Tuesday. Bill Burton will be missed by too many people to count and by an entire industry that appreciated him as its number one cheerleader. Bill Burton was everybody?s friend. He was always positive. He was radio?s biggest advocate. He was fabulous. Radio Ink Publisher Eric Rhoads said, ?Bill embraced me as a friend and gave me constant encouragement over decades. He?s been a great mentor, taught us all vital lessons like ?Never take no from someone who can?t say yes,? and he was always positive in spite of numerous back surgeries and pain. He is probably responsible for more auto billing to radio than anyone in history. He is a radio legend, and there is a big hole in my heart over his loss.?

Bill Burton started his radio career at the then-independent rep firm Eastman Radio and was President/Chairman when Jacor bought Eastman in 1987. He's headed DRAG since 1995, and consistently traveled the country giving "Why Radio" presentations to top decisionmakers in the advertising community. Burton estimates that, during his 30-year-plus career, he's contributed to about $300 million in radio sales.

Burton was given the Radio Ink Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009

For over 40 years, Bill Burton was my mentor and friend. He was never too busy to answer a question, offer advice or listen to a concern. He was one of the most positive influences on my career and leaves a legacy from which the industry can continue to benefit if we all take a page from his play book and "Be Fabulous!"
Radio Ink General Manager Deborah Parenti

"For the whole of his career, Bill Burton has been Radio's greatest promoter rivaling the greatest promoters of all time: P.T. Barnum, Wild Bill Hickok, Don King, Muhammad Ali, Vince McMahon, Bill Veeck, Bill Graham, David Merrick, Norman Granz, and Walt Disney. In point of fact, Bill?s fingerprints are on every automobile order you ever got out of Detroit, going so far has to arrange for the University of Michigan band to strike up the band under the office window of a motor city decision maker whom Bill discovered was a U of M graduate. Top that if you can."
Dave "Giff" Gifford

"There was nobody I was closer to in the business than Bill. He was always up energetic and positive about life. He has carried lots of pain the last 5 years and never complained. He was always there and could not have been a better friend"
Bob Liggett

(12/20/2014 10:12:01 PM)
I am so sad hearing this news. Bill was a friend to all of us in the radio industry, and will be sorely missed. We have lost so many good radio professionals in the past few years. Bill was someone who made you proud to say "I'm a salesman". RIP, Bill

Banzhaf Not Giving Up

12-19-14

Following the FCC ruling to approve the WWXX license renewal, attorney John Banzhaf said he has many more arrows in his quiver. "The law is clear, that employers must take steps to avoid and correct any racially hostile work environments, even if the employer is a newspaper which enjoys the highest level of First Amendment protection. Thus radio and TV stations, which as regulatees enjoy far less First Amendment protection than newspapers, cannot hide behind the Constitution regarding this allegation."

Banzhaf went on, "Virtually everyone seems to assume that no radio or TV station which repeatedly and unnecessarily used racial slurs like 'n*ggers, 'ch*nks,' 'k*kes,' etc., on the air would be allowed to continue broadcasting, much less have its valuable broadcasting license renewed. All we seek here is that Native Americans be given the same protection as African Americans, Asians, and other racial and ethnic groups."

(12/19/2014 3:53:53 PM)
To Mr. Banzhaf: I suppose "Cleveland Indians" will be next to go...
(12/19/2014 12:35:24 PM)
Of course he's not giving up. His kind never do. He's a tenured academic who gets paid whether he produces anything valuable or not. And in this case, the only thing he's produced is more sound and fury, signifying exactly zilch.

Host Catching Heat For Cancer Comments

12-18-14

Here's another on-air situation that keeps a manager up at night wondring how bad the bad publicity will get. Philadelphia talker Chris Stigall is getting some national publicity but for all the wrong reasons. The WPHT morning show host is being called out (see the New York Post HERE) for saying something about a Philadelphia Phillies fan who has cancer. Julie Kramer was bombarded with love and affection from Phillies second baseman Chase Utley on The Ellen Show; the 23-year-old Kramer is battling a rare tissue cancer. Utley invited Kramer to as many Phillies games as she wanted to attend. That's when Stigall stepped in it.
According to The New York Post, Stigall said, "You know Chase Utley's not going to be around to take the cancer patient to the games. It's a nice invite, but he won't even be there. Plus, it's probably terminal what that woman has. You think she's going to live through an entire season?"

According to Philly.com, Stigall offered an "awkward" apology a day after his original comments. "I know my heart and intent was something very different than my words, but that doesn't matter. It is my prayer that Mrs. Kramer was successful in her battle," Stigall said. "And my thoughtless attempt at a joke about our show conveyed a sentiment that came off as much different. And for that, I am sincerely sorry."
