Minneapolis DJ Takes Leave Due To Stalker

Mary Lucia, a DJ with Minnesota Public Radio's KCMP/89.3 The Current, announced she is leaving the airwaves temporarily due to a stalker that's been following her at work and at home. Lucia posted an open letter on the station's website detailing the mental trauma she's endured. In the note, she said : "My life over the last year has involved a series of restraining orders, seemingly endless calls to 911, the installation of security cameras at home, and police photo ID line-ups. Do You Have What It Takes To Stay Connected?

10-5-14
With WiFi becoming standard in the car, there's a lot on the auto dashboard today that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago. Services that used to be offered only by AM/FM -- not just music, but traffic, weather, and ads for local businesses -- are now coming from elsewhere on the dash. Radio will need to understand it all and and become more innovative than ever just to keep up. Do you understand what's on the dashboard today, and what's on the way?

At Radio Ink's DASH conference, coming up October 15-16 in Detroit, you can hear from Rich Martinek, General Motors' senior manager global marketing/global consumer. He'll be delivering a keynote on "Today's Connected Car," explaining what GM is doing on the dash and its plans for the future. If you want to keep up with those new competitors in the car, it's a talk you can't afford to miss.

Rich Martinek heads up OnStar brand marketing, advertising, and promotion, and marketing strategy for GM's infotainment and telematics business. He's worked on business initiatives including the launch of OnStar 4G LTE and the launches of the Chevrolet Spark, Sonic, Malibu, and Impala, and he's led programs with high-profile media opportunities like the Olympics and the Super Bowl.

And he's an advertising pro: Before joining GM. Martinek spent a combined 17 years at the J. Walter Thompson and Young & Rubicam agencies, with clients including Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealer advertising associations.

(SALES) That Takes A Cake!

10-21-2013

If you want an appointment with a prospect bad enough, you can get it if you are willing to do something extra to prove to the prospect you are deserving of their time.

Far too often, we just use the phone to try to set up appointments. And far too often we just leave messages on their voicemail over and over again, somehow expecting them to call us back.

When I work with media companies, I always try to emphasize with the sales reps it?s about being creative and rising above the clutter to gain a prospect's attention. That?s when they start to notice you in a world jammed with package-peddling sales reps. When the prospect sees that you?re willing to do the little extra to get the appointment, they are likely to at least see what you are bringing to the party/table/appointment.

A few years back, when I was working in Savannah, Georgia, I was given a list of ?20 Ways to Get the Prospect's Attention...Now? by Kathy Teague Enfinger. Here's and example of taking #4 ? " Cake: Let WWWW be the icing on your cake!" to a whole?other?level.

I was on the phone last week with my friend, D.J. Williams who has taught me a thing or two about creativity in commercials. We come from the same school -- you sell the creative process and ideas and it doesn?t matter if you?re in Timbuktu, you get in the door and eventually will get the business. D.J. does great creative, of course. D.J. is also on the street in Denver where the rubber meets the road and he sells for a living. He was telling me about an idea where he gets the appointment almost every time. I was impressed.

After he qualifies a prospect, he goes to work on sending them a cake to gain access to the decision-maker. I will let D.J. take over from here?

When I am doing the research for my spec spot on the client?s website, I just right click and "save picture as." I usually use the logo or try and find a staff photo so that everyone is included in the fun. I then send the pictures/logo to our sales assistant Del and he puts an amazing collage together with our station logos on it and puts it into a pdf and emails it to the bakery. They scan it right onto the cake and then I go and pick up the cake myself and personally deliver it to the prospect's place of business.

(D.J. either gets the appointment on the spot or follows up with a call to the key decision-maker, or he emails the decision-maker directly knowing he has their attention. Here?s an example of his follow-up email. Also, Saturday afternoon? Who does that? )

Good Morning P.T....it's D.J. Williams.

I'm not sure if you heard/saw that I stopped by on Saturday afternoon and dropped off an awesome cake for your team! I've attached a photo in case you didn't see it.

Obviously, I have heard some of your recent commercial messages on WWWW and was wondering what I may able to do to get in on the fun!

We have some pretty cool things going on at Jammin 101.5 and 107.1 Jack FM that I'd love to tell you about and wondered if there might be a good time for us to meet this week?

Looking forward to hearing from you!

D.J.

"Piolin" Story Takes Disturbing Turn

July 30, 2013

The Los Angeles Times reports that Eddie "Piolin" Sotelo's abrupt departure from radio last week came after a co-host on his show accused him of sexual harassment. Alberto "Beto" Cortez alleges that Sotelo was "physically, sexually, and emotionally harassing" him for three years. That claim was sent by Cortez's attorney Robert Clayton in April to Univision executives Roberto Llamas and Jose Valle. Univision syndicated the program. According to the paper, Sotelo's attorney, Jeffrey Spitz, said the allegations were false and motivated by money.

Spitz said in a statement, "A disgruntled, troubled employee has made malicious and false claims about Eddie Sotelo. This was done as part of a demand for money ... The employee worked with Eddie for more than a decade. The employee's allegations of harassment and falsification of immigration letters are pure fiction intended to gain a financial settlement."
In the documents obtained by The Times, Cortez claimed that Sotelo repeatedly made aggressive and unwanted sexual advances, including grabbing Cortez's buttocks and genitals when Cortez would arrive at work in the morning at the Glendale studio. Cortez alleged that Sotelo taunted him during staff meetings, calling him by a derogatory term for a homosexual, and telling him to say that he was gay. Sotelo also asked vulgar questions about Cortez's girlfriend, according to the documents.
In addition to the claim of sexual harassment, Cortez alleged that Sotelo ordered members of his radio production team to falsify letters in support of a high-profile campaign for congressional immigration reform, an issue that Sotelo championed on his program.

Geraldo Takes Aim at Talk Radio

Why is it that so many Americans desire that we become a communist nation where only the government's position matters?

I am hispanic and just like the overwhelming majority of Americans I oppose legislation that would give citizenship to illegals in this country.

People don't want this and yet even the media has gone against the people of this country.

Big corporations located in the US are crying that they don't have enough high tech workers such as engineers etc. and the government needs to allow them to bring in more foreigners. The truth is, there are many engineers, computer programmers, etc., that are out of work but companies want to bring in foreigners because they can pay them far less.

The bottom line is, we need talk radio and we really need a press that represents the people. Unfortunately the Associated Press, MSNBC, CNN and FOX represent the views of the very rich that undeniable run this country. Over 90% of Americans oppose the wars in the Middle East, yet not one of these media outlets gives representation to this side of the argument.
