How To Coach Sports Talk Talent

3-5-15

If you run a sports station you probably know it's a tough task dealing with talent at times. The successful ones can be very opinionated. At the Radio Ink Sports Radio Conference in Dallas, consultant Scott Masteller led a panel about coaching Sports Talk talent. Masteller was joined by Weiss Agency VP Heather Cohen, WEEI Brand Manager Kevin Graham, XTRA-San Diego PD Brian Long, and Ryan Maguire, PD of KDKA-Pittsburgh. Here's what they had to say.

Long told attendees that coaching isn't just a thing, it's everything. Great coaching is what sets talent apart. It isn't only air checking, it's about creating a link to your talent. "Talk to them about their lives. Coaching is about creating great communicators, and opening them up to tell their stories." So what did the others have to say?

Maguire noted that being a great talent coach is about being "part boss, part coach, part shrink and part pal." Maguire said that it's important to find a way to reach out to your talent as individuals. It's the most fun and most difficult part of the job. Building equity and trust (with your talent)." Cohen says mentoring is everything and it's important to manage expectations. "Part of that includes protecting your talent. Good managers protect their talent from dust-ups, and yes, even sales."

WEEI Brand Manager Kevin Graham has worked with some of the most high-profile talent in Sports/Talk. He says being able to relate to your talent, to "your guys," is an absolute necessity. "Your talent needs the support to win. You have to help your talent to understand that you are there to help them with, to help them get ratings."

Key Strategies To Sell Sports Radio

4-5-2015

At the Radio Ink Sports Radio Conference Thursday, four top sports sales pros gave attendees some of the secret sauce they use to sell in the markets they operate in. Moderator Jay Meyers, CEO, BMT/BCA, spoke with Joe Bell, SVP/market manager, CBS/Miami; Alec Drake, GSM, Sportsradio 1310AM /96.7FM The Ticket; and KLIF-FM Dallas-Ft. Worth; and Bob Visotcky, general sales manager, BCA Radio/San Diego.

The goal was to uncover how successful stations generate maximum local revenue from play-by-play, and how they sell local and play-by-play platforms. As the session went on, it became obvious that these folks are not selling radio, they are selling a brand, an experience, a content-delivery system. Social media, NTR, and events are key with advertisers. "We've got a very content-rich app -- clips, podcasts of what they missed, etc," said Drake. "We have 176,000 uniques on our stream -- that's a lot of audience."

He added that all Sports stations need to look at partnerships with advertisers and find ways to leverage those partnerships.

Bell's heritage Sports Talker, WQAM-AM/Miami, has been in a pitched battle of late with newer 100-kW FMs in the market. "We have to take things a step further," he said. One of the things WQAM does is host a "Holiday Lunch" with all advertisers that buy Joe Rose's show in morning drive. Bell said, "It levels the field against these FMs."

Bell also ties in a lot of play-by-play opportunities with the Miami Hurricanes: "We look at every opportunity to maximize revenue."

Visotcky noted that not every play-by-play opportunity is created equal. "We used to have the Cowboys on the Ticket," he said. "We chose back in 2009 to sign a new agreement with the Dallas Stars. We discovered in time that the Ticket brand was stronger than carrying the Cowboys play-by-play."

On selling the format, Bell said to keep in mind that Sports is a passion format. "What we try to do is get to the ultimate decision-makers. Agencies typically don't buy our format. You've got to get to the person who can mandate to the agency that we get on the buy." He said the mantra should be, "We're the home of affluent men with money to spend."

Probably the most impressive strategy brought up at the session was Visotcky's "spec bomb" -- creating a spec ad and playing it on an advertiser's voicemail at 9 p.m., so it's the first thing the advertiser will hear when they get into work the next day. "You'd be surprised how many people call me back in the morning," Visotcky said.

Meyers concluded the session by emphasizing that if you are in Sports radio, you are not "in radio ... you are in the content-delivery business."

What You Need To Know To Sell Sports Radio

2-26-2015

At the Radio Ink Sports Radio Conference, beginning Wednesday in Dallas, Jay Meyers is set for his panel on "Five Things You Need to Know to Sell Sports Radio." Meyers will target maximizing local revenue on play-by-play, how your sales department can win when your local sports team isn't, and getting premium on your products in a CPP/CPM world. More...

Radio Ink caught up with Meyers, CEO of BCA Radio/San Diego, as well as president and CEO of Adelante Media Group, to give us a few hints on his panel at 9 a.m. on Thursday in Dallas. Meyers gave us a tease on at least one of the "Five Things You Need to Know to Sell Sports Radio" he will be focusing on. Meyers says, "Sports Radio is a male soap opera that you have to listen to in order to sound knowledgeable when speaking sports to your friends." Makes perfect sense, what better way to sling stats and come off as Mr. Sports with your friends than to "steal" your game from the experts on sports radio? Make them need to listen and feel they will miss out on the "soap opera" if they don't.

On the subject of keeping engagement with sales and listeners when your home sports team is falling off a cliff, Meyers says, "This is the single-hardest thing to do. The best thing, of course, is to sell season-long packages and (get) your number before the season starts." Meyers continues, "But season sales are definitely affected by performance and other than creative selling of packages, not (as) much."

The best piece of advice that Meyers can pass along for selling play-by-play and local on Sports formats? Meyers notes, "Selling it like regular spot radio or transactional business" is the biggest mistake sports broadcasters can make. Join Radio Ink  in Dallas for the Sports Radio Conference starting Wednesday (March 4-5), and circle Jay Meyers on your playbook for his session, "Five Things You Need to Know to Sell Sports Radio," Thursday at 9 a.m.

How to Coach Sports Talent to Success

1-20-2015

Sports Talk radio today is just about as competitive as the sports it covers. So what do you need to do to develop a winning lineup? Where can you go to seek tomorrow's top talent? What are the keys to building a strong bench and a super farm team?

At Radio Ink's Sports Radio Conference, coming up March 4-5 in Dallas, you'll hear from a panel of "Killer Coaches," moderated by leading Sports radio consultant Scott Masteller. These top programming and talent trainers will talk about the sometimes-unexpected ways they've spotted and developed Sports radio superstars. They know how to find the talent that will make yours a top-seeded brand, and you need to hear from them.

Moderator:

Scott Masteller is a veteran Sports radio programmer and talent coach with more than 23 years experience in the industry. He started in sports media in 1991 as a baseball play-by-play broadcaster for the minor leagues in Wichita, KS. His entry into Sports radio was with WLAP/Lexington, KY, on-air in afternoons, doing play-by-play, and as program director. He moved on to other markets, including Salt Lake City in 1996 and Portland, OR, in 1997; in both cities he was PD and afternoon personality. He became PD of ESPN-FM in Dallas in 2001, launching the station in the market. Masteller joined ESPN as senior director/content in 2006. He was later named senior director of affiliate and syndicated content, a position he held until November 2014, with a focus on affiliated and syndicated content, talent coaching, and PD development.

Heather Cohen is executive vice president of the Weiss Agency, a broadcast talent agency that represents and develops the careers of many of the industry's most successful local and syndicated personalities. Cohen joined the Weiss Agency from GreenStone Media, where she was VP of programming. She arrived at GreenStone from New York's legendary WOR, where she was APD and responsible for the station's local and national on-air content, programs, and production. She also served as executive producer for WOR's award-winning Joan Hamburg Show.

Brian Long is PD of XTRA 1360/Fox Sports & KOGO, San Diego. His career in spoken word formats began in his hometown of Kansas City, at the heritage KMBZ. In 1998, Long headed to California for stints in Palm Springs, Bakersfield, and Los Angeles. During his time at ESPN in L.A., he was part of the programming management team and also hosted a variety of on-air programs. In 2007, 2008, and 2009 L.A. Daily News recognized him as one of its Top Ten Sports Radio Personalities. In late 2010, Long became program director at ESPN in Seattle, and he was later promoted to senior director of programming for Bonneville Seattle. He took his current post in early 2014.

Ryan Maguire, program director of CBS Radio's KDKA-FM (93.7 The Fan)/Pittsburgh, is a broadcast professional, talent coach, and brand marketing manager with over two decades of experience in the Sports Talk radio format. The stations he's managed have all shown a quick improvement in both ratings and revenue, as well as improved digital metrics. Maguire has received numerous honors for his work in station management: Radio Ink magazine named him one of the Best Program Directors in America in 2011, and the station he programmed was nominated for a Marconi Award in 2014. Maguire has also gained experience in front of the microphone as well, having served as a sports reporter, anchor, talk show host, and play-by-play announcer.

(12/5/2014 2:19:50 PM)
I do not know what has motivated your reorganization, but John and Andrew are the best there are; even if you do not agree with John's views half of the time, at least Andrew keeps an even keel. And, Dana was number one followed by Tiki of the preceding trio. Why is she out also. I hope your next act doesn't drive me away from CBS.

Greater Media Gets Creative In Detroit Sports Battle

8-4-14

Reminiscent of the old days when stations would really go at each other to try to win over listeners and create buzz, Greater Media's Detroit Sports 105.1 found a way to get the job done. The station was hoping to broadcast live from Detroit Lions training camp, however CBS Radio is the official radio partner of the Lions so the broadcasts were denied. The station made a deal with Tech Shop Detroit, whose facility borders the Lions practice field, and obtained permission to broadcast from the Tech Shop parking lot. The station then rented a 50-foot scissors lift and broadcast live from 50 feet above the field.
