Today, on his Facebook page, Diamond explains why he's already quit the job. Diamond says he could not find the school he wanted for his son and housing is notoriously expensive in San Diego. He could not make the personal pieces fit in California and moved back to DC.

After a dozen years at Clear Channel and a steady rise all the way to Executive VP of Clear Channel's Western Region, Susan Karis is leaving the company. Karis was responsible for L.A., San Francisco, Sacramento, San Diego, Seattle, Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio. Karis, who will appear in the upcoming Radio Ink issue of the Most Influential Women in Radio told us for that issue, "Our business is in a constant state of movement, so be ready to move with it. Don?t be afraid?Embrace it."

With the Karis resignation, Clear Channel also announces that Tom Schurr becomes President of Operations for Major Markets, and Matt Martin is the new President of Operations for  Regional Markets. Schurr and Martin report directly to John Hogan. The change is effective immediately.

In this new position, Schurr, previously Executive Vice President of Operations for the Eastern Region Major Markets and a 30 year broadcast industry leader, will ensure that Clear Channel's major broadcast markets have a dedicated operational focus, efficient lines of communication and continue to leverage the powerful, innovative resources that make Clear Channel the leading media and entertainment company in America.  Schurr began his career at Taft Broadcasting and has worked for a number of various broadcast organizations prior to Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, including Great American, Citicasters and Jacor.  At Clear Channel he has held leadership roles in a number of markets across the country, including Buffalo, Milwaukee, Sacramento, Louisville, Houston, Dallas, Nashville and more.

John Rohm, Senior Vice President of Operations for the Southeast Regional Markets, and two soon-to-be-named Senior Vice Presidents of Operations for the Regional Markets, will report to Martin.

The recent realignment also included the promotion of Tom McConnell as an Executive Vice President of Operations for the Major Markets.  McConnell has been a valuable part of the Clear Channel team since 1995 when he began his career at WHYN in Springfield, Mass.  McConnell worked his way up through the ranks including Market Manager and Regional Vice President in Hartford, Conn., President and Market Manager of Boston, Mass. and Providence, R.I. and his previous role as Senior Vice President of Operations for the Northeast Regional Markets.

John Rosso Leaves Cumulus

October 31, 2011: The industry shakeups continue as John Rosso exits the Cumulus network. Rosso had come over with the network when it was with Citadel and he told Radio Ink last night the split with Cumulus was amicable. "We are parting friends and I look forward to working with Cumulus in the future." Rosso was at the network since 1995 when it was still with ABC. Mike Pallad and Dennis Green will most likely get added responsibilities with the network.

Rosso sent a note out to his co-workers. Here it is. "Over the past two years, I have watched this team write a terrific turnaround story. Today, our division has become profitable and is now poised for significant growth. That growth comes as a result of all your hard work to reinvent our product and streamline the business. I?m writing to congratulate you on this success, but also to let you know that I?ll be leaving my role as President of the network effective today. Cumulus has a very strong organization in place to operate the network and to maximize its future success. In addition, John Dickey and I have discussed having me consult on some projects, and I look forward to that possibility. I?m proud of our accomplishments together. It's been my pleasure to work with you (with some for 16 years!) and learn from you. Thanks for everything."

Rosso was named Citadel Media Networks president in 2009, coming over from the SVP post at Citadel Interactive. Before that he was with Citadel Media predecessor ABC Radio Networks in various roles, including SVP/Affiliate Relations and VP/Operations, and prior to that he was SVP/Digital Media for Walt Disney Co.'s ABC Radio division.

7/14/2011

One insider told Radio Ink yesterday it's like drinking from a water hose for Merlin in Chicago as they take over Q101 and WLUP - or whatever they are going to be called. Merlin has no General Manager for the stations as of yet and Marv Nyren has decided not to take a position with Merlin, opting to stay with Emmis. Nyren will take a job in the Emmis digital division.

Nyren will be staying in Chicago working with Angie May Cook. Nyren has been with Emmis for 11 years, 6 in Chicago and 5 in Phoenix. All we could get from Walt Sabo on a new GM hire was the one word response "undecided".

After 3 Decades Mark Miller Leaves WBAL Baltimore

July 13, 2011

Miller has been with WBAL for 32 years, 21 years as the stations News Director. WBAL Vice President and General Manager Ed Kiernan sent the following memo to the WBAL staff to announce the change: "Mark started as an editor/producer, and then was a reporter for ten years. For the last 21 years, he has overseen the news operation. Being the news director at a station like WBAL can be all consuming if you?re going to do it well.  Mark let me know that at this point in his life, he wants to take on new challenges and write a new chapter to his life.  Most importantly, he wants a new career that will allow him to have a more ?normal? life that better suits his family circumstances with his wife and four-year-old daughter."

Kiernan went on to say "As a reporter, Mark won two Maryland State Bar Association gavel awards.  He won the Silver Gavel from the American Bar Association.  Twice in the 80s he was recognized by UPI for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Radio. Under his leadership, the accomplishments of the WBAL News Department speak for themselves. In 1993, WBAL Radio?s reporting on the fall of Baltimore Comptroller Jackie McLean earned it the Award of Excellence from the Associated Press Broadcasters.  That award is the highest broadcast honor handed out nationally by the Associated Press. In June 2000, the WBAL News Department won the New York Festival Grand Award, topping more than 1,300 contestants from 37 countries."

"But mostly, I am proud of the 21 National Edward R. Murrow Awards earned by the news department during Mark?s tenure.  Ten different members of our staff have won National Murrows in that time, in seven different categories.  And three times, WBAL News earned the Overall Excellence Murrow as the best large market news operation in the country. 1090AM/WBAL Radio is Maryland?s most important and influential radio station thanks to the efforts of Mark Miller.  He is my friend and I will miss him dearly."

Broadcaster Blues After Home Team Leaves Town?

The Broadcasters Blues After The Home Team Leaves Town?
by Chadd Scott reporting for Radio Ink from Atlanta

With the recent relocation of the (NHL's) Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg, most of the conversation has centered on the team?s ownership, fans and players.  What about its radio broadcasters?  Sports Radio 680 the Fan had served as the long-time flagship station for the Thrashers and they fired pre and post-game host Mitch Evans with the team no longer in town.  My look at the radio fallout of the Thrashers move begins with an interview I conducted with Evans (pictured below).

Throughout this season as talk of relocation surrounded the Thrashers, how aware were you that your job was dependent on the outcome?
Evans: I was never told that my job was in jeopardy, but I certainly was aware in my own mind that it could be. Since I was also part of the station's (680 the Fan) Braves coverage in hosting the wrap-up show, I thought at the very least I'd lose my full-time staff position, but would continue doing Braves as an independent contractor. Obviously, things didn't turn out that way, and I was very disappointed about that.

How difficult was it for you to watch this story unfold knowing your employment hung in the balance?
Evans: It was difficult to watch both personally and as a hockey fan. As things digressed on the ice, I couldn't help but think that the team's free fall in the standings would ultimately effect the fate of the franchise remaining in Atlanta - and thus my own situation. Thrashers fans deserved better. The people of this city deserved better. Atlanta IS a bona fide sports town. It can support four teams, but ownership and the NHL failed it.

What was the most satisfying aspect of your work with the Thrashers?
Evans: I'd say the most satisfying aspect of my work covering the Thrashers was just reconnecting with the sport in general. It had been a while since my job responsibilities "required" me to go to the games. I grew up a hockey fan in NYC and upon moving to Atlanta in 1985, there was no team here. I went to a stray (Atlanta) Knights game here and there, but when we got the expansion franchise it was exciting. I went to games while at 790 (WQXI) as the station had the rights, but I wasn't around the team 24-7.

This isn't the first time your job has been the casualty of a team moving - this time moving cities, last time moving broadcast partners from WGST to WCNN - how difficult it is to work knowing your job may be lost as the result of factors you have no control over?
Evans: Not only did I lose one job with a franchise moving to another city and another with a team's broadcasting rights changing, but I also lost my position as host of "Falcon's Daily" on Falconsvision (Comcast) after 3 years when the NFL Network came into being, and the league's owners voted against allowing teams to have their own TV channel. Frustrated can not even begin to tell you how I feel. It doesn't make it any easier to have your bosses tell you that "you did a great job, it has nothing to do with your performance, and it's just business." I don't know if this is 3 strikes and I'm out. I've worked in the sports media for 20 years now -- 15 here in Atlanta -- and I can walk away content. I am exploring other possibilities in my life outside of the business, but I've made no decisions yet.

I'd like to stay here if possible, but I'm open to relocating if the right situation came about. I can be contacted mitchshap@bellsouth.net. In the coming days, I hope to update you on the status of Thrashers? play-by-play broadcaster Dan Kamal.
