Salem Re-Locates NY Stations To Manhattan

9-14-13

Salem Communications has reached an agreement to move it's two New York radio station studios and offices from Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey to lower Manhattan before the end of 2013.  The new offices and studio's will be located in the Trinity Building next to Trinity Church at 111 Broadway, where the studio's of WOR had been located since 2006. WOR is moving into the Clear Channel headquarters building. AM 570 WMCA and AM 970 "The Answer" WNYM will both be housed in the building adjacent to the historic Trinity Church and cemetery in lower Manhattan,  only blocks from ground zero and Wall Street. The building was originally constructed in 1905.

The move marks a return to Manhattan for WMCA which moved to New Jersey in 1989. Salem VP Director of Spoken Word Format Phil Boyce said, "Salem has a major commitment to winning in New York and this move will help us take both stations to the next level. We know for years great radio came out of this building when it housed WOR and now we have the opportunity to continue that tradition with both WMCA and AM 970 The Answer. As an added plus, WMCA, known as New York's Christian Talk, will be re-locating next door to historic Trinity Church, founded in 1697,  as the oldest church in New York City. There is some divine providence going on here,  as WMCA,  which is licensed to the city of New York now moves next door to the oldest church."

Former longtime WOR General Manager Jerry Crowley will be moving back home and taking over his old office,  as will his long time assistant Noelia Santelli who joined Salem only a month ago as Events Coordinator. Crowley said, "I am extremely pleased that the radio facility we built there when WOR moved in will continue to be operated as a great radio station,  only now with new call letters and frequencies. It is a joy for me to return to those halls and be able to utilize one of the top notch radio studio facilities in Manhattan,  now for my new company Salem Communications."

Salem Communications CEO Ed Atsinger is Christian Conservative Power

7-10-13

Ed Atsinger has been on Radio Ink's 40 Most Powerful People in Radio list for 17 years. That will be no different when the 2013 issue, and Atsinger's position on our list, are revealed next week. Salem Communications has a corner on the conservative Christian market. With nearly 100 stations pumping out $165 million in revenue, Atsinger and company are superserving its target audience, and no one has been able to compete in Salem?s particular arena. Here's a sneak preview of what Atsinger says about the radio industry in our power issue.

Ed Atsinger has been CEO, a director of the company, and a director of each of the company?s subsidiaries since Salem?s inception and was president from its launch through June 2007. He?s been engaged in the ownership and operation of radio stations since 1969, and has been a member of the board of directors of the National Religious Broadcasters for a number of years; he was re-elected to a new three-year term on the NRB board in February. He?s been a member of the NAB board since 2008.

Atsinger believes radio has not been able to tell a better story for two primary reasons, ?First,? he says, ?the sheer magnitude of technological developments impacting audio and video entertainment ? whether it be the creation of new audio platforms, complementary video platforms, or the technological evolution of existing platforms ? has so monopolized the popular imagination and so dominated the news media that there has been little room left to promote the impact and effectiveness of free, local, over-the-air terrestrial radio. Second, that same rapidity of technological development has presented a major challenge to the radio industry in terms of the emergence of a coherent industry consensus about that ?better story.??

Atsiner says ?Radio does have a better story.' In our 40 Most Powerful Pople in Radio issue, which you can order HERE, Atsinger summarizes his points in five bullet points. Here are two of those five:

?The automobile continues to be the number one location where audio content is consumed, and in spite of all of the technologically sophisticated talk of the ?wired dashboard,? safety, simplicity of use, local information, and being free of all costs, including bandwidth, will likely ensure radio?s prominence.

?In spite of online audio competition having a minor impact on time spent listening, terrestrial radio, with its 93 percent reach, is more effective today because the digital revolution allows terrestrial radio to more fully exploit its inherent advantages of being free, live, and local with enormously expanded interactive capability. This provides a richer experience for our audiences and improved accountability for our advertisers.

Salem owns the Salem Radio Network, which syndicates both secular and religious talk and news and Christian music to 2,000 affiliates; Salem Radio Representatives, a national radio advertising sales force; Salem Web Network, a leading Internet provider of Christian content and online streaming; and Salem Publishing, a leading publisher of Christian-themed magazines. Salem owns and operates 60 stations in the nation?s top 25 markets, with 29 in the top 10. And over the past year, it?s been gobbling up digital properties like Godvine.com and SermonSpice.com and has launched the all-new ChristianRadio.com.

To see what else Atsinger - and everyone on our Power List - has to say, subscribe to Radio Ink in time to receive the Top 40 Issue  delivered to your home or downloaded to your device.

I've known Ed and his brother-in-law, Stu Epperson, for 34 years. The wise counsel they offer their employees behind the scenes is deeply touching. If all employers related to their employees in the manner of Ed and Stu, I believe we would be a happier nation. Knowing Ed, I'm sure he's embarrassed by the headline, "Ed Atsinger is...Power." In their private lives, these guys do nothing that would indicate, "I have power." They're even gracious and kind to really bad waiters in restaurants.

Salem Increases Quarterly Cash Distribution

3-18-2013

The Salem Communications Board of Directors has increased its quarterly cash distribution from $0.035 per share to $0.05 per share. Salem CEO Ed Atsinger says, "The decision of our board to increase our cash distribution will be welcome news to shareholders and other stakeholders. The 2013 distribution represents less than 20 percent of our expected free cash flow for the year. This meaningful increase is due to the growth in free cash flow that we expect in 2013 as a result of our stable business performance and substantial reduction in interest expense from our recently completed refinancing."

The cash distribution will be paid on April 1, 2013, to all Class A and Class B common stockholders of record as of March 25, 2013. Salem also announced it has scheduled its Annual Meeting of Stockholders on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at 9:30 a.m. (Pacific Time) to be held at Salem's headquarters in Camarillo, California.

Mark Davis Paying Off Big For Salem

11-9-2012

On his 3rd quarter conference call last night, Salem Communications CEO Ed Atsinger bragged quite a bit about the performance of talker Mark Davis. Davis joined Salem's KSKY-AM in Dallas back in May after his contract was not renewed by Cumulus at WBAP. Atsinger said ratings at the station were up 36 percent in the 3rd quarter and they continue to get better thanks to Davis. Third-quarter broadcast revenue at Salem was up 2 percent.

Like most other public radio companies, July and August were strong and in September the bottom fell out. Atsinger says October was up about 10 percent but November and December are pacing at a slower rate. In Q3 Salem took in $1.5 million in political advertising and year-to-date the company has booked $3.1 million, making 2012 the best year ever in  political advertising revenue for the company.

(11/9/2012 10:22:38 PM)
Lew Dickey wouldnt pay this guy. He was TOO expensive remember. Hes a ratings and revenue machine in market 5. More horrific decision making by guys named McVay, Pinch and Jeffries. Huckabee is no Mark Davis. Davis is local and Dallas.
Can someone tell me the last profitable move the Dickeys have made????
BTW Kudos to Salem. Nice move and nice catch from the fumbling Cumulus.
