RAB Ready To Take On Las Vegas

4-8-15

The mammoth NAB Show in Las Vegas kicks off next week and despite how easy it is to get lost amongst the 98,000 people, there will be a healthy dose of radio sessions awaiting your arrival. There will be over 750 sessions planned during the week, many of them specifically targeting radio sales and management, including 55 that are part of the Broadcast Management Conference. If you're heading to Vegas to enhance your ability to sell, manage, and motivate back home, here are a few you may want to check off as favorites on your NAB Show app.

On Monday the 13th at noon, RAB President and CEO Erica Farber will moderate the panel discussion "Vision and Leadership -- Getting the Buy-In." Farber and the panel of three radio upper executives will look at how the most successful managers are actually inspirational, communicative leaders. On top of the great information, there is a free box lunch to attendees.

On Monday at 2 p.m., MITTONMedia President and CEO John Mitton will present "Recruiting Radio Sales Superstars in the New Media World." One of the most common comments from radio sales managers is "I can't find good salespeople anymore." Mitton will offer some tips on how to find and recruit talented salespeople from within and from outside of media, among other topics of interest.

Creative Resources CEO Gerry Tabio will present "7 Ways to Leverage Your Client Needs Analysis for Radio Sales Success" on Monday at 3:15 p.m. Too often, the lack of understanding of what a client truly needs results in frustration and lost revenue. Tabio will present ideas that sales managers can bring back to their teams to help produce better success for sales and to better service the clients.

One of the most popular sessions each year is the "Small and Medium Radio Markets Idea Exchange." That will take place on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Cromwell Group President Bud Walters will moderate the panel discussion as they share some of their winning sales and promotion ideas. The second half of the session will have the audience break into groups to brainstorm ideas of their own. Each of the groups will be seated at tables that will feature radio experts to help with the sharing of ideas. The goal of the session is to have managers return to their stations with solid ideas on how improve revenue.

On Tuesday, starting at 2:30 p.m., there will be a six-part session entitled "45 Foolproof Ideas to Enrich Your Radio Station." Among the mini-sessions within the whole presentation will be topics on leadership, technology to help staffs, monetizing community service efforts, monetizing apps, ways to stay in legal compliance for the station, and one mini-session entitled "Seven Ideas to Drive Radio's Revenue Growth." That section will be presented by RAB Senior Vice President, Professional Development John Potter who will be presenting new ideas on how to deliver sustained revenue growth for radio stations.

All of the sessions being presented at this year's NAB Show can be seen here.

Will Any Deals Get Done in Vegas?

4-3-14

The NAB's big show kicks off next week in Las Vegas, and while it is now dominated by Television and New Media, there will be radio executives in the massive crowd, roaming the Las Vegas convention center. Many of them will be hosting or attending private meetings in some of the nicest hotels in the city. Some will be buyers. Some will be sellers. The question is, do they see eye to eye on price. Brokers will be ready to match their willing sellers with those looking to grow, who have the financial backing. In the April 7 NAB issue of Radio Ink Magazine, we spoke to the most respected brokers in the business today to get their perspective on the level of deal activity they see in the marketplace, multiples in 2014 and who the real players are in the market. One of those brokers is Doug Ferber, the CEO/CCO of DEFcom Advisors in Dallas. Here is our interview with Ferber that subscribers will see on Monday.

Radio Ink: In terms of number of deals, were you surprised or was it what you expected over the last twelve months?
Ferber:
I wasn?t really surprised. I thought by now there would be more stuff sold. Right after the crash, if you talked to the bankers that were worried about their loans during 2009 and 2010 they said not much was going to happen until 2013. Everything is still kind of being pushed back. Business is what it is, where some of these companies are slow or no growth

Radio Ink: Are you getting a lot of tire kicking or people that want to do business?
Ferber:
Well the buyers that are out there are serious, but they are serious with low prices. I wouldn?t say tire kickers because they?re real. There?s an element out there that still believes in the business. But there?s not the piles of money out there from private equity that there was a couple of years ago, nothing to really prop up pricing. It goes back to economics 101. The more dollars chasing fewer things the higher the prices go. There?s not a lot of dollars chasing the radio deals that are out there. Your pool of buyers is pretty shallow.

Radio Ink: Who is the most active?
Ferber:
Larry Wilson, Jeff Warshaw and Summit Media. The list is pretty short. When guys like me talk to sellers, they look at the list and say, ?is that it?? The response is yes. In a climate like this a lot of times, the first group that?s really serious is probably the best prospect. Whereas when times were really good, you could put together some really good auctions. You?d have 5-10 really good prospects that bid. You?d get 5-10 guys submitting letters of intent. You?d put them on the phone and you?d see what comes out. You were able to do multiple rounds. The buyers in today?s market know there aren?t many guys out there. It depends on the deal, but Larry and Jeff have got the ability to close on almost anything.

Radio Ink What are the multiples the way you are seeing them?
Ferber:
Six and change. In 2003 guys were buying at 12X. Today, and this has held up pretty well, anything that was purchased pre-crash, and really there wasn?t any activity in 06-07, is now worth about 25% of what you paid for it.

Radio Ink:  Do they ever get out of that?
Ferber:
Let?s use Clear Channels as an example. They?ve been able to restructure their debt options a couple of times. Clear Channel, and I haven?t seen the numbers for a while, has about 20 Billion in debt and around a Billion five or so in cash flow. That billion five services their debt and not much more. But every time they kick the can down the road, it gets more expensive. In some cases, and I think Entercom might be a good example of this, they have more cash flow then their debt service, so they?ve been able to pay their debt and cut into principal. If the industry can do more of that, it would be a financially healthier business in a few years. But I don?t know what we?re going to see with Clear Channel because that?s going to be a very interesting thing in 2016, they have a very big hurdle to jump. My guess is the banks will work with them because they don?t want to see a 20 billion bankruptcy. I can?t imagine anyone would want that.

Radio Ink: Is there money out there to buy radio stations?
Ferber:
When you talk to the banks that go to the conventions they say they are doing deals. But it has to be $50 million of loan value and all the moons have to line up. It?s got to be perfect. So that doesn?t leave really any available financing for the lower market. Other than Summit Media, I don?t know of any other loan generated on any kind of scale other than that.

Radio Ink: If someone came to you and said he wanted to be an owner and purchase several radio stations, is now the right time?
Ferber:
I would be a buyer. I think the business is still a great business. It?s resetting. We?re in a time of new media, change, the landscape is different. But, I think what we?re finding is that if radio can keep up with things technologically, getting in smart phones, etc, that?s really going to be key in the long run because you?ve got to be able to receive a radio on the same platform as the Internet. Let?s assume that happens, radio will be very healthy for a long time.

Radio Ink: What is your prospective as to why Radio can?t grow revenue?
Ferber:
I?m not an operations guy, so maybe that would be a better question for Jeff Warshaw or Larry Wilson or somebody but, I don?t think the industry knows how to sell advertising in a digital world yet. And, in some cases, there isn?t enough digital inventory to really sell on any kind of scale. So I think local radio stations only have, basically what they do is create a platform of relationship type opportunities for inventory and they sell it when they get different types of proposals. They only have a limited amount on their own site and on the site they have relationships and are able to sell. Whereas, Pandora has a national platform, they have several 10?s of millions of people using the product.

So on a local level it?s tough. There was RAB research that came out that showed that either the GM?s think selling digital gets in the way of selling traditional advertising and selling traditional takes away time from selling digital. Salespeople aren?t trained well enough to sell digital to begin with which goes back to the fact that we don?t train our people. Why? Because we don?t have the money, we?re using it all to pay down debt or service debt.

Radio Ink: What do you think we?re going to see in the next twelve months as far as stations being bought and sold?
Ferber: Well I don?t think it?s going to be much different from what you see now. From a big deal standpoint, nothing?s going to happen for a while because Clear Channel has their 2016 hurdle, which they probably will. Cumulus won?t do anything for a while. The exit, for Clear Channel will be to go public or to sell public to clear some of its debt. The exit for some of the consolidating private equity guys, if they want to get out, is to go public, or merge and become bigger. I don?t think it?s going to be much different than it is right now.

(MIW SPOTLIGHT) CBS Las Vegas PD Charese Fruge

6-24-2012

Charese Fruge has been in the radio business for over 20 years. She's currently the Program Director of Mix 94.1 and X107.5 in Las Vegas and one of Radio Ink's Most Influential Women of 2012. Fruge's stellar career has been Charese has been the female station voice for KMXB in Las Vegas, Alice in San Francisco and Denver, Star in Los Angeles and Mix in Houston. She says, "I love making a connection between the music and the audience." Her advice to anyone looking to become a success in this business, "be a survivor." Here's more from one of radio's great programmers and one of Radio Ink's Most Influential Women.

RI: How did you wind up at the Mix in Vegas?
FRUGE:
I started in promotions and did over nights in Southwest Louisiana at KSMB in Lafayette. My career path is very much like a roller coaster ride. It took me to Beaumont, Texas to do Mornings with Mark Landis at KIOI, then to Baton Rouge to do my own Morning Show at WFMF, where I was then recruited to go to B97 in New Orleans. I did every shift possible on that station until I took a job to work with some guy nameg John Jay Van Es J at KKBQ in Houston. We were HORRIBLE, by the way J. So I moved back to New Orleans to work for Entercom?s WLTS/WEZB/WLMG  and to get in to the Programming/Music side of Radio. From there, I moved to the  ?other City of Sin? Las Vegas to do Midday?s and be the Music Director for Mix 94.1. About a year and a half later I was the Program Director of the station.

RI: Sounds like you were thrown into the fire
FRUGE:
I didn?t know what I was doing, but I was having a BLAST programming simply with passion for the music. We had one of the Top Performing Hot AC?s in the country and we did some amazing events because Vegas was the Entertainment Capitol of the World! After about 5 years in Vegas, Jerry McKenna (My current boss at CBS Las Vegas) recruited me to Program Alice (KALC) in Denver for Entercom. Exactly 1 Year Later I was Programming Star (KYSR) in Los Angeles. Fast forward to now and I will tell you that in the last 4 years, I have moved 4 times and Programmed KSCF in San Diego, KLLC in San Francisco, KMBX, and KXTE in Las Vegas and KZZO in Sacramento (sometimes 3 stations, in 3 different markets at one time, all for CBS Radio). I just recently moved back to Las Vegas to focus on my 2 stations here, take a breath and get a life. I am very lucky and CBS has been very supportive of my decision to settle into one market. I have amazing teams who make my job worth going  to every day.

RI: Why have you succeeded?
FRUGE:
I think it?s because I am driven. I try to focus and pin point what I want, then I go after it. I don?t pretend to have all the answers and I am not afraid to ask questions. I have three older brothers and a football coach for a father. My mother spent the better part of my childhood teaching me not to be afraid and that it was okay to want and achieve a career. I strive to be passionate, open minded and solution based and I understand what it means to play on a team. I surround myself with great people and have a strong desire to help make them successful. If they look good, I look good. I have amazing teams on both KMXB and KXTE and they have contributed immensely to my success. As have the teams I have worked with over the years. No matter what position you play, you can?t win alone and I am very fortunate that I have the teams and the tools in place to be successful.

RI: What do you love about radio the most?
FRUGE:
Selfishly speaking, I love breaking new artists and developing and nurturing relationships with the artists. I love making a connection between the music and the audience. I love sitting in my car with the volume all the way up listening to my favorite song play on one of my stations. There is no feeling like it in the world. I also love when Mark and Mercedes and JC (KMXB) make me laugh, or when Dave and Mahoney and DK (KXTE) get me fired up because they are talking smack about my Saints. They are all seasoned pros and I love feeling them connect with the audience and watching them grow and succeed. I started in Morning radio and as much as I prefer being behind the scenes, I live vicariously through them and listening to both shows starts me off with a smile every day.

Any advice for the Radio Ink readers?
FRUGE:
Put together a plan and believe you can achieve it. Understand that it won?t happen overnight, but if you take the right steps, build and nurture relationships and look at everything and everyone (good or bad) as a learning experience, you will eventually get there. Also, it?s important to understand that sometimes those goals will change. The one thing you will need to be is a ?Survivor.? This business changes so often, and so fast. The most important lesson you can learn is that most of it is not personal, it?s just business. So when you run into a road block, find another route. You will eventually get to your destination.

What mistakes can you help them avoid?
FRUGE:
The three biggest mistakes to avoid in the business: Working in Denial, Letting your EGO get involved and Beating Yourself Up. You MUST learn to choose your battles wisely. We spend so much time fighting things we can?t control because we are in Denial. Take a step back and look at the situation. Is it a communication break down? Is there another option? Or a another way to make it work? Or is it something you just can?t control. If it?s a circumstance, move on and find another option. If it?s a person, agree to disagree and move on. Don?t let egos get involved. Most of the time exercising Ego will only blow up in your face or come back to haunt you. I am a big believer  in Karma and no one wants to work with an egomaniac. And the most Important mistake you should avoid, is beating yourself up. You have to give yourself a break and know when to say when. The people in this industry are a certain type. We beat ourselves up more than anyone else does. Own up to it if you screw up or if you are challenged, but give yourself a break when you need it and celebrate the wins when they come. If you don?t, you?ll wake up one day and ask yourself where your passion and your life went.

Congratulate Fruge for a job well done and representing radio so well HERE

(6/25/2012 5:57:28 PM)
Congtarulations, my daughter, I always knew you would suceed. As always,I am so proud and impressed with you. Hope to see you soon. Love Mom

NAB Vegas to Honor Troops

3-10-2012

The National Association of Broadcasters and ThanksUSA announced today a country music benefit concert to kick off the NAB Show in Las Vegas, Sunday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m., in support of military families. The concert will take place at the Encore Theater in the Wynn Hotel and feature Rodney Atkins (pictured) and a performance by Texas and Nashville singer-songwriter Lucas Hoge.

NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith said, "These dynamic performers are sure to be a hit with NAB Show attendees. The concert is also a wonderful opportunity for our attendees to give back by supporting America's military families who have given so much for our country." The event is part of ThanksUSA's mission to provide spouses and children of active duty men and women with need-based post-secondary educational scholarships. Since ThanksUSA's inception in 2006, the organization has awarded 2,500 scholarships to military families, for a total value of nearly $7.5 million.

As a token of appreciation to Las Vegas' active duty military, ThanksUSA will invite 400 families from nearby Nellis Air Force Base to attend the concert. In addition, tickets will be available for all NAB Show attendees at the door for a charitable donation of $20.

"I am so grateful for everything our soldiers do and the sacrifices they make on a daily basis. It's my honor to do anything I can to support them and their families, especially through a great cause like ThanksUSA," said Atkins. "The importance of education in this country is paramount, and ThanksUSA provides just that by offering scholarships for higher education to the husbands, wives and kids of service members."
