Arctic Monkeys maintained their perfect record on the U.K. album chart yesterday (June 12) by scoring their fourth new entry at No. 1 from four releases, debuting at the top with "Suck It and See" (Domino). London rapper Example achieved his first No. 1 single entering at the summit with "Changed The Way You Kiss Me" (Ministry of Sound).
"Suck It and See" sold 82,000 copies last week according to the Official Chart Company, as Arctic Monkeys extended a sequence that started in 2006 with "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" and continued with 2007's "Favourite Worst Nightmare" and "Humbug" in 2009. "Suck It and See" achieved the feat despite the relatively modest performance of its first single "Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair," which peaked at No. 28 in April. It's only the second time in U.K. chart history that a band have arrived atop the album survey with four studio titles in succession, the first group to realize that feat being Keane, with a quartet of releases from 2004 to last year.
The Monkeys' debut ended Lady Gaga's rule with "Born This Way" (Interscope/Universal) after two weeks. It fell to No. 3 as Adele's "21" (XL Recordings) held firm at No. 2, and her previous set "19" fell 3-5. 11-year-old "America's Got Talent" runner-up Jackie Evancho debuted at No. 4 with "Dream With Me" (Syco Music/Sony Music Entertainment).
The "Glee" Cast's "Glee The Music Vol. 6" (Epic/Sony Music Entertainment) opened at No. 6 and Anglo-Irish girl group Wonderland's self-titled Mercury/Universal debut at No. 8. English acoustic/new wave singer-writer Frank Turner's fourth solo album "England Keep My Bones" (Xtra Mile) arrived at a career-best No. 12, Iron Maiden's new "From Fear To Eternity" best-of collection on EMI at No. 19 and American pop-punk band All Time Low's "Dirty Work" (Interscope/Universal) at No. 20.
For the ninth straight week, "Now That's What I Call Music! 78" (EMI Virgin/UMTV) leads the compilation chart.
Example's single sold 115,000 units to debut at No. 1. After reaching No. 19 with his debut hit "Watch The Sun Come Up" in 2009, he had top ten singles last year when "Won't Go Quietly" peaked at No. 6 and "Kickstarts" at No. 3. "Give Me Everything" (J/Sony Music Entertainment) by Pitbull featuring Nayer, Afrojack and Ne Yo fell to No. 2 after three weeks on top. Nicole Scherzinger's "Right There" (Interscope/Universal) leapt 14-3.
Coldplay's swiftly-released "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" single (Parlophone/EMI) started at No. 6 with 37,000 sales, as "I'm Into You" (Def Jam/Universal) by Jennifer Lopez featuring Lil Wayne climbed again 10-9 and "Bass Down Low" by Dev featuring the Cataracs (Universal Island) 12-10.
