Experiments Gone Right

Experiments Gone Right

There are companies and stations that genuinely understand what they need to do to thrive in the new media world. But they're not always the biggest players. Smaller local and regional broadcasters are as likely as the larger companies to have imagination and the drive to innovate, and they can combine that with the flexibility to implement good ideas fast, cut losses on what's not working, and adapt to changing circumstances on the fly.

At Radio Ink's Convergence 2010, the "Experiments Gone Right" panel will cover the innovations by smaller companies that have brought new revenues, new ideas, and new ways of selling to radio. Moderator Dave Kennedy is CEO of mobile technology company FlyCast and brings a broadcast-industry veteran's perspective to the table. He'll be talking with GAP Broadcasting EVP/Digital Media Vic Savelli, an expert on the sometimes-complex relationship between traditional and new media, and myLocal.net co-founder Jason Banks, an innovator in the community-based Web portals that could be key to keeping radio local and engaged in a digital world.

The Panelists

David Kennedy is CEO of Flycast, Inc., founded in 2006 by a group of seasoned PC and Internet industry veterans to create advanced IP-based mobile delivery technology that focuses on smartphones and other mobile devices. Before Flycast, Kennedy was CEO/Vice Chairman of Interep National Radio Sales in New York. Earlier in his career, Kennedy held various on-air and management positions at Toledo radio stations WMHE and WLQR until being promoted in 1983 to Vice President/Planning and Research for Susquehanna Radio Corp. In 1989, he was named Senior Vice President, and in 2004, he became CEO of Susquehanna Media. Kennedy has chaired, actively participated in, and received numerous accolades from the boards of directors of the NAB, RAB, the John Bayliss Broadcast Foundation, and the Library of American Broadcasting Foundation.

Jason Banks is co-founder of myLocal.net, a Carson City, NV, company that develops community Web portals for broadcasters. He earlier headed the Internet division of Clarke Broadcasting Corp., managing one of the largest local ISPs in central California and redesigning and relaunching myMotherLode.com, a full-featured community portal that generates some 2.5 million pageviews from 110,000-plus unique visitors every month. Banks and H. Randolph Holder, owner of Clarke Broadcasting, founded myLocal.net to help other broadcasters leverage their on-air assets and unique local content to strengthen their connections to their audience, grow their influence, and increase revenues in the interactive space through implementing local community Web portals.

Vic Savelli is the Executive Vice President/Digital Media for GAP and GAPWEST Broadcasting. Before joining GAP, he'd been in media for over 25 years, across digital, television, and newspaper. Savelli served as Vice President of Digital Sales for the Dallas Morning News, where he was responsible for DallasNews.com as well as the employment advertising sales division for both print and online, and launched and coordinated the Yahoo newspaper consortium partnership for Belo and the beta test market for the sale of Yahoo local inventory. Before joining DallasNews.com, Savelli was Regional Director of Sales for Texas and the Eastern U.S. for Belo Interactive, helping structure and manage the first Internet sales models for both newspapers and television stations. While in this role he launched innovative products across Belo sites, including Cars.com, behaviorally targeted advertising solutions, and the registration-based MySpecialsDirect permission-based e-mail marketing program.
