Ad Dollars Continue Move To Digital

3-19-2015

Ad budgets are being pruned and the remaining dollars are moving to digital, according to a research from Kantar Media, reports the New York Times. The report notes that the 10 biggest advertisers cut their spending by over 4 percent last year. A large part of the revenue that is being spent on ad buys, is being routed towards mobile and video. The report notes that radio ad spending declined 3.9 percent.

Although local retailers who are shifting dollars to digital are going to be sorely disappointed, one can understand why they are pulling out of radio.

Ever listened to the spots they are getting....? It's still about The Messaging.

The Changes Continue At Dial Global

3-20-13

And they come at the very top of the company. It was on February 11 that Dial Global announced it was changing its three CEO structure. David Landau left the company, Ken Williams was named President, and Spencer Brown (pictured) kept the CEO title. Yesterday, both Brown and Williams resigned and 23-year Time Inc. executive Paul Caine was named CEO. This is a change that might have been in the works even before the February 11 announcement. CEO hires typically take a lengthy search and interview process.

A Dial Global press release states that both Brown and Williams will work with Caine to facilitate a smooth transition and will also remain shareholders of the company. Caine takes over April 5 during a challenging time for the network business. The competition is fierce, advertising has been weak due to a stagnant economy, and an explosion of new ways advertisers can reach consumers and the way consumers listen to audio are ever-changing targets.

Cain says, "Dial Global will propel the growth of audio as the essential medium for the mobile experience. We have premium content, top-tier distribution, and prestigious live event assets. Our opportunity is to expand these experiences for consumers, broaden our repertoire of content partners, and integrate our on-air, digital, and live event offerings to create compelling engagement for advertisers." Among the brands Caine will have to work with are the National Football League's primtetime games, playoffs, and the Super Bowl; CBS Radio News; NBC News Radio; and the upcoming launch of the 24-hour sports network with NBC Sports.

Ad Dollars Continue to Shift to Digital

3-15-13
eMarketer is reporting on a Duke University survey that says marketers are continuing to move their money toward digital and away from traditional media. "As recently as August 2011, marketers expected traditional ad spending to increase incrementally over the following year. But by February 2012 they began to project that traditional ad budgets would shrink, and in February 2013 the expected size of that decline over the next 12 months reached 2.7%."
The study also says digital investment will continue and that comes at the expense of traditional media. "The increase in digital ad spending was projected to be most dramatic in the business-to-consumer (B2C) product category, which was expected to se a 14.6% bump over the 12 months following February 2013. B2C and business-to-business (B2B) services were forecast to see similar increases in digital ad spending." eMarketer also predicts growth in digital ad spending in the US, with budgets totaling $42.5 billion in 2013 and increasing to $60.4 billion in 2017.

Consumers Continue to Go Mobile

1-11-13
eMarketer reports mobile devices continue to be a strong and growing component of the digital shopping landscape. Both smartphones and tablets are  contributing to higher levels of ecommerce sales as more consumers adopt to devices and become comfortable shopping on them. eMarketer estimates that in 2012, US retail mobile commerce sales increased 81% to nearly $25 billion. This year, they expect an increase of 55%, and mobile sales will account for 15% of all retail ecommerce.

eMarketer?s says this is a confluence of three trends: first, the expanding number of smartphone shoppers whose behavior affects commerce in all channels; second, the growing number of smartphone buyers who enjoy the immediacy of purchasing through their phone and are expected to generate roughly one-third of mcommerce sales this year; and third, the rapid rise in tablet shopping, which will produce the bulk of mcommerce sales over the next four years.

Auto Sales Continue to Shine

9-4-2012

Radio's biggest ad category continued to show strength in an otherwise lackluster American economy. Chrysler, GM and Ford each reported double-digit sales gains in August compared to one year ago. Most analysts say consumers can no longer hold on to their aging vehicles and that, in addition to favorable financing, are two of the reasons for the gains.

GM rose 10%, Chrysler?s was up 14% and Ford jumped 13%. Toyota was up 46% and Honda was up 60% but those gains were a little skewed due to low inventory last year due to severe weather.

Deadline Passes For KXOS Sale, Talks Continue

8-10-12

In a Thursday SEC filing, Emmis Communications reported that the August 8 deadline for Grupo Radio Centro's "qualified designees" to buy KXOS/Los Angeles for $85 million had passed, meaning the price of the station automatically reverts to $110 million, per an earlier put and call agreement.

KXOS is operated by Mexico City-based GRC under an LMA; that MA and the other provisions of the 2009 agreement remain in effect.

However, Emmis and GRC are talking about a possible further amendment to the agreement; according to the filing, the "qualified designees' banks have informed the parties that the financing process has been delayed but continues to move forward."
