Indiana Senate Passes FM Chip Resolution

4-10-15

If the carriers won't turn the chips on, perhaps the government will pressure them to do so. On Thursday, The Indiana State Senate (Emmis Communications is headquartered in Indianapolis) adopted a resolution ?urging wireless carriers to activate the FM radio receivers already installed in most smartphones.? The resolution focused on the need for Indiana residents to have direct access from their smartphones to the emergency information broadcasts of local radio stations. Similar legislative actions are set to take place in other states.

The resolution outlines the consumer benefits of an activated FM radio in smartphones including radio?s accessibility during an emergency, light battery usage, and non-reliance on internet data to function. Also noted was the fact that smartphones currently sold in the U.S. have this FM radio 'chip' already present and would require minimal effort to activate, allowing owners of these phones to listen to local FM radio stations throughout the United States.

(4/10/2015 10:51:27 AM)
A resolution is a statement of position. It carries no legal authority, has no force of law, and is simply a letter stating their opinion on a particular subject. It means nothing. They spend time on this stupid stuff while the economy is going down the drain and people are out of work instead of doing real work to help make government better.

Oh, Jeff! LOL!

(4/10/2015 9:29:01 AM)
Oh, Indiana.

Radio Legend Ron Ruth Passes

11-16-13

One of radio's giants, Ron Ruth, passed away this past weekend, at the age of 75. A familiar and beloved figure, Ron spent 19 years at the Radio Advertising Bureau as EVP of stations until 2011 when he left to become an outside consultant for the trade group.

His stint at the RAB followed a successful radio career that started on the programming side in San Antonio. Making his way to Boston, Ruth ended up sharing a small apartment with two other aspiring jocks, Jack Burns and George Carlin. "I soon realized I had no talent for being on-air, so I talked the GM into letting me sort of get into sales."
Eventually, the road led to New York and WOR. As Ruth related in a 2005 R&R interview, "Then they moved me to New York to this thing called WOR-FM. It was an amazing rocket ride and going absolutely nuts as the No. 1 FM in the country. I decided to move to Europe. I took my wife at the time and our two young children and packed everything into six boxes and four suitcases and went off to London. We bought a van and struck out."

"Fast-forward 18 months, and I got a call from San Juan Racing. They tracked me down because of my supposed expertise in classical music and wanted me to go to WTMI/Miami, which I agreed to do. I was there about a year, and Storz contacted me to go over to WQAM, which was No. 1 in Miami at the time. I was there about four or five years and then went to Hawaii, where I got into ownership."

Longtime friend George Hyde worked with Ruth at the RAB for many years. "Ron was a great friend to anyone in the Radio industry. He had an easy manner that made everyone around him feel important. There are thousands of broadcasters today who mourn his passing not only with a tear, but with a smile in remembrance of his effervescent personality and how he made them feel."
And in a statement from the Radio Advertising Bureau, "It is with a sad and heavy heart that the RAB announces the passing of our beloved colleague and Radio industry favorite, Ron Ruth. Ron succumbed to cardiac arrest early Saturday morning after battling health issues the last two months. Ron was at the helm of the RAB Membership team for twenty-plus years."

Funeral arrangements are pending.

(11/18/2013 12:06:29 AM)
Wayne Cornils-Ron Ruth. Two great men and great leaders and teachers. The very best of the best. Ron Ruth: Great man and did so much for my growth in my career! Thank you Ron Ruth!

8-10-12

In a Thursday SEC filing, Emmis Communications reported that the August 8 deadline for Grupo Radio Centro's "qualified designees" to buy KXOS/Los Angeles for $85 million had passed, meaning the price of the station automatically reverts to $110 million, per an earlier put and call agreement.

KXOS is operated by Mexico City-based GRC under an LMA; that MA and the other provisions of the 2009 agreement remain in effect.

However, Emmis and GRC are talking about a possible further amendment to the agreement; according to the filing, the "qualified designees' banks have informed the parties that the financing process has been delayed but continues to move forward."

Voluntary Auction Legislation Passes House

12-14-2011

Yesterday, the House passed the spectrum legislation as part of a package that includes a payroll tax holiday. It's unclear how this legislation will end up, many democrats are saying this package will likely fail in the Senate and the President has vowed to veto the payroll tax package if it remains in its current form. The spectrum legislation could raise $16 billion for the Treasury from the auctions. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said ?Incentive auction authority, which has broad bipartisan support, needs to become law. Unless we free up new spectrum for mobile broadband, the looming spectrum crunch risks throttling our mobile economy and frustrating mobile consumers."

The House legislation would authorize the FCC to conduct voluntary incentive auctions as recommended in the FCC?s National Broadband Plan. It also provides funding for a public safety broadband network for the nation?s first responders, which was another recommendation of the National Broadband Plan. The NAB "strongly" supports the spectrum language in the House bill.

The bill was not perfect for Genachowski.  "Several provisions of the House bill would tie the agency?s hands in ways that could be counterproductive, reducing economic value and hindering innovation and investment.  One important example is the legislation?s seeming limitation on the Commission?s ability to accommodate new technologies, including those that use unlicensed spectrum, like super WiFi or machine-to-machine Internet connected devices.  I encourage Congress to leave no doubt that the FCC can continue its policies to promote unlicensed spectrum use alongside licensed uses."

Utica NY Radio Icon Passes.

It's not easy for the Townsquare staff to walk by Bill Heiderich's desk today knowing the man that spent so much of his life in our industry will no longer be around. Heiderich passed away at the age of 89 and he represented the radio indsutry well right up until the day he died. Townsquare Media CEO Steven Price says Heiderich was a wonderful man. "Consummate professional who loved WIBX and represented us so well for over 40 years. It was an honor and a privilege to work with him."

Heiderich was born in Utica in 1922. He was raised and educated in Utica and graduated from Utica Free Academy. Heiderich was a WW II vet and worked for the Secret Service. Bill Heiderich's career in radio began in 1947 when he joined the sales department at WIBX as an account executive. He was named local sales manager in 1954, GSM in 1965, VP in charge of sales in 1982, and VP/GM in 1988. He remained with Townsquare Media as a public relations director until the day he died.

MaryJo Beach is the VP/GM for Townsquare in Utica. "Bill Heiderich was a wonderful ambassador of WIBX and all of Townsquare media.  He showed up to work every day since 1947. He would come into the station smiling and whistling and always brought a smile to all of our faces.  When I came to the stations in 1992 he took me under his wing and taught  me the importance and the need of balance between job, family and community.  Walking past Bill?s desk is hard for all of us at this moment, a desk filled with awards of honor and proclamations .  We miss him immensely and we cherish our memories of the area?s most respected gentleman."

Dennis Ryan was close friends with Heiderich. "Bill Heiderich was the original Class Act.  He loved radio, understood the value of locally-focused, live radio broadcasting and knew how to make it work for thousands of clients spanning his 60 year career in Radio Advertising Sales.  Equally important, was his mentorship of hundreds of Radio Sales People, many of whom he groomed to move up to management and great careers of their own.  He was so proud when one of "his people" landed a better opportunity in a bigger market, and he was always interested in how we were doing.  I can tell you that, in addition to myself, VP / General Managers like Dan Farr of Backyard Broadcasting, Brian Delaney of Clear Channel and Mary Jo Beach of  Town Square Media, just to name a few, all owe Bill our deepest gratitude for his guidance.  We are all better people for having known Bill Heiderich.  God Bless Him"
