Small Market Public Stations Could Be Hit Hardest Without Public Funds.

Small Market Public Stations Could Be Hit Hardest Without Public Funds.

We've heard from many public radio stations across the country. In the larger markets, it appears that while stations would hate to lose the federal funding, they could deal with it. Perhaps they go back to the members or pick up a few more sponsors. Maybe they make programming or staff changes to cope. They weren't worried they would go off the air. Small markets, on the other hand, are a little more stressed out.

Interim NPR CEO: "Defund Bill Stunts Diversity"

Following the successful defund vote by the House of Representatives, interim NPR CEO Joyce Slocum issued a release focusing on small-budget public stations across America saying they would be placed in a serious financial bind. "The communities they serve would be unable to provide sufficient support to fill that gap, leaving these stations no options for maintaining service." Republicans disputed that claim during debate yesterday discussing how some of NPR's listeners are pretty wealthy.

House Votes to DeFund NPR 228-192

H.R. 1076 defunds National Public Radio and prevents public radio stations from paying NPR dues and buying NPR programs. The debate was pretty much down party lines. But the final vote was very close. Most democrats who spoke were in favor of federal funds for NPR. Most republicans during debate oppose funding NPR.

Advertisers Spending More Money According to Kantar Media Report. Radio Looking Good.

Total spending increased 6.5 percent in 2010 and finished the year at $131.1 billion according to the report. Ad spending during the fourth quarter of 2010 was up 7.0 percent over 2009. The report gives a lot of the credit to small advertisers. The report says "improvements in Radio advertising were tilted towards local markets. National Spot Radio brought in 18.6 percent more ad dollars versus 2009 and Local Radio achieved a 4.9 percent increase. For each of these, higher spending was driven by the financial service, media and auto dealer categories."

Don't be a Twit-Wit. Avoid Being Fired For Your Tweets

As recently reported by Radio Ink, Chad Scott believes he was terminated by Dickey Broadcasting in Atlanta for tweeting about his unsatisfactory experience with Delta Airlines. While social media can and should be a tremendous tool for marketing your personal and station brands, there are some guidelines for every individual to understand. You may feel you have a First Amendment right to free speech. Well, you do. But with rights come responsibilities, and in this era of total transparency, that can mean consequences. So what ARE the rules for "Media Twitterquette"?

RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES - "Ask The Attorney"

"Your on-air DJ just tweeted something negative about an advertiser. The advertiser called you and has threatened to cancel all advertising unless you fire him. You ARE planning to fire the DJ. What do you need to look out for as you get ready to fire him to make sure you are covered?" We threw that question in our new "Ask The Attorney" segment with John Garziglia.

Earlier this week Dickey Broadcasting sports guy Chadd Scott was shown the door. It happened to be on the same day he tweeted a little negativity about Delta airlines. Seems Scott had travel issues with Delta and let his feeling be known via Twitter. Is that a crime worth losing your job over? What are the Radio rules for tweeting? Vote in our poll and post your comments NOW!

"Toilets To Towers". How General Managers Do It All

Being a General Manager can be a stressful gig. Whether you work for one of the biggies and have to file an abundance of reports, talk to corporate every day and manage 7 staffs or whether you own one stick on the corner of Main and Maple, your days are full. You probably love some things more than others. You're probably great at some tasks and not so good at a few (not that you'd admit it). But at the end of the day, you wouldn't do this job if you didn't love it...and love Radio. In one of our new features called "From Toilets to Towers" we spoke with Doug Wilber of WOBL Radio. He's the owner, General Manager and everything in between. It's a great read as you head into your weekend. Enjoy.
