HOUSE VOTES TO DEFUND NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO.

Final Vote 228-192 to Defund NPR

H.R. 1076 defunds National Public Radio and prevents public radio stations from paying NPR dues and buying NPR programs.

The debate was pretty much down party lines. But the final vote was very close. Most democrats who spoke were in favor of federal funds for NPR. Most republicans during debate oppose funding NPR.

The republicans are trying to "cripple NPR and public radio stations" according to California democrat Henry Waxman. The republicans claim NPR is an unfunded subsidy and the government can no longer afford to fund everything. The author of the bill Doug Lamborne from Colorado says "I'm a strong believer in the free market. NPR should compete with others for their funding. They can and should be supported with private sources. Let it live on its own".

The most entertaining presentation was made by New York representative Anthony Weiner who made a joke about republicans going after "Car Talk". He said the hosts "giggling and snorting on the air, clearly they are talking to the Russians. I'm so glad we had this emergency meeting so we can get rid of Click and Clack. That clearly was what the American people said they want. The last think we want is people telling us how to fix our cars. Finally, taken off the public payroll. Finally my republican friends are doing it. Kudos to you.
