Hard to Believe. Advertisers Still Discriminating.

Yesterday's memo from the FCC requiring stations to verify that their advertising contracts do not discriminate against Hispanics and African Americans is good news to David Honig. Honig is the executive director of the Minority Media & Telecommunications Council. Last night we spoke to Honig and asked him just how much discrimination he believed was going on in radio. Some of his answers may surprise you after all these years.

FCC Warns Broadcasters About Discriminatory Advertising Contracts

The FCC is getting serious about not allowing "no Urban/no Spanish dictates" to occur in our industry. Radio stations must certify that advertising contracts include nondiscrimination clauses and do not discriminate on the basis of race or ethnicity. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said, it should be clear that the Commission will vigorously enforce its rules against discrimination in advertising sales contracts. As the Commission stated in its order adopting the rule, discrimination simply has no place in broadcasting.�

"Glen Beck May Start His Own Cable Channel"

What happens to Glen Beck on TV once his contract with Fox expires later this year? The N.Y. Times is reporting there are two possibilities. The paper says Beck has considered taking over a cable channel or expanding his subscription service on his website. The paper is reporting that Beck and Fox have a frayed relationship and Beck may not return to the network. The paper says Beck has been contemplating taking over a cable channel for over a year now.

Slacker Radio Announces Deal With ESPN For Content.

Slacker has announced that ESPN Audio content will be available on Slacker Personal Radio. Slacker listeners will have access to an interactive dedicated station covering all facets of sports entertainment, with the option to include ESPN SportsCenter headlines for hourly updates on any Slacker music station, and the ability to create custom sports stations with ESPN Radio programming.

Howard Signs New Deal, Files Suit Against Bosses

Stern's production company and manager Don Buchwald are suing SiriusXM Radio claiming Howard was bilked out of stock awards SiriusXM promised him. According to the suit, filed in New York, Sirius promised Stern a share "in any success that the company achieved." The suit claims, once Sirius gobbled up XM in a merger with the rival sat company and hit the 20 million subscriber number, it decided Stern made enough money.

Another From the Good Guy Era Passes. Former WMCA General Steve Labunski Dies.

According to "The History of WMCA" Labunski, a former executive in the Todd Storz organization, came to New York in 1958 as WMCA GM. "Todd Storz and Bill Stewart are credited with the idea of creating "Top 40" radio. While in the mid 1950's the idea was new, the concept was simple. Play the most popular songs from a tight playlist over and over again in a defined format. Labunski had been in Kansas City prior to coming to WMCA and had worked with a talented production and programming manager named Ruth Meyer.

UPDATE: Stolen Station Equipment Recovered.

Less than 48 hours after going dark non-profit WCYC-LP in London, OH is back on the air. Police recovered the stations stolen equipment from an apartment yesterday and returned it to the station. A report on the NBC-TV website in Columbus says the equipment was recovered along with two stolen vehicles. An officer located the stolen truck that had been previously stolen from Cook Motors between March 18-21 according to the report. When the officer had contact with the vehicle, the driver fled on foot and the passengers stayed in the truck.

West Texas A&M University Fined $3,200 For Operating Radio Station Without A License.

The University asked the commission to reconsider fines against KWTS-FM after failing to file a license renewal application. The college argued failing to file was not willful, payment of the fine would cause financial hardship and it had a history of compliance. The commission canceled the University's failure to file fine of of $7,000 because it was discovered after the statue of limitations had expired. However, the University will have to pay $3,200 for operating the station during a period without authorization.

Dr. Nancy Alvarez to Launch Syndicated Radio Show.

Alvarez is the current host of the Univision show "Quien Tiene la Razon?" She has signed a contract with Gold Voice Radio and Television Network to launch a project for a syndicated radio show to be broadcast nationwide as well as throughout Latin America, the Caribbean and Central America.
