Radio Executive Carl Hirsch Dies of Heart Attack at Age 64.

Hirsch's friend, Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan told Radio Ink when he heard the news his jaw dropped. "It was just a shock. Carl was a very likeable guy, a very good guy. He was one of the great entrepreneurs of this business." Like everyone else, the passing of Hirsch was a surprise to Smulyan who started in Radio at about the same time Hirsch did.

Bob Pittman Quickly Puts His Internet Expertise to Work For Clear Channel.

You have to think that radio traditionalists may be having a problem with the latest move by Clear Channel. It's a push pull kind of situation right now. Radio people are in the business of programming radio stations so enough listeners will lead to gobs and gobs of advertising revenue. Smart radio people also realize the need to stay ahead of the Internet curve. Consumers want more than a pre-programmed music station filled with (don't kill the messenger) way too many commercials. Models such as Pandora and Slacker are popular. The unknown is revenue. Can this model create gobs and gobs of money? We shall see.

What in The World is Thumbplay?

Up until yesterday I thought I was a pretty savvy Internet person. I don't write code or anything super smart like that, however, I can build a pretty decent Jimmy Buffet sounding radio station on Pandora. And, I understand why Slacker is catching on (I may have had a little help with the interview I did of Jim Cady). I guess I should be ashamed to admit until yesterday I never even heard the word Thumbplay.

Tex Meyer Named VP/GM For BCA/San Diego

Tex Meyer comes to Broadcast Company of the Americas as VP/GM of Classic Hits XHPRS and Sports XEPE-AM and XEPRS-AM. He was most recently GM of Curtis Media's WKIX-AM & FM in Raleigh, a post he took in May of last year. He's also served as VP and market manager for Clear Channel Radio in Greensboro.

Doug Franklin Named To Head Cox Media Group

Cox Media Group has a new president, as Doug Franklin moves up from EVP. As head of CMG, Franklin will oversee Cox Enterprises' 86 radio stations, 15 TV outlets, eight daily newspapers and other print publications, all digital services, and Cox Reps. CMG also owns and operates leading direct-mail company Valpak. At CMG, Franklin succeeds Sandy Schwartz, who becomes president of Cox's Manheim automotive-services subsidiary. Schwartz has been with Cox since 1985.

CRB Names Radio Promotion Winners

The Country Radio Broadcasters announced the 2011 Radio Promotion Award winners today, which are given for creativity and implementation of promotions. They are presented annually at the Country Radio Seminar in Nashville.

Katherine Galanty Joins Sports USA as Vice President of Affiliate Relations

Sports USA has hired Katherine Galanty as Vice President of Affiliate Relations. Prior to joining Sports USA, Katherine served as Senior Director of Affiliate recruitment at ISP Sports and Senior Director/Affiliate Sales for Westwood One.

FCC Rejects Petitions To Reconsider Translator Fines

The FCC has denied petitions for reconsideration of two $250 and one $500 forfeiture order filed by Bible Broadcasting Network. BBN filed late license renewals for translators in Laramie, WY; Hopkinsville, KY; and Princeton and Fairmont, WV.

LFM Revenues Rise $75 Million In 2010

Lincoln National Group's 10K annual report with the Securities and Exchange Commission shows a rise in "media revenue" for the insurance giant, to $75 million in 2010, up from $68 million in 2009. That category covers Lincoln Financial Media, which has radio stations in Miami, San Diego, Denver, and Atlanta.

Wall Street Journal Gets Copy of Internal Groupon Memo

The Journal says Groupon had a surge in revenue from $33 million to $760 million in 2010. And the paper reports most of those sales came from outside the United States. The email was sent by Groupon Chief Executive Andrew Mason to his employees in January. The Journal says Mason hopes to achieve billions in revenue in 2011.
