The Cumulus-Citadel merger involves more than 500 stations, so some spins were inevitable, but it's surprisingly few: Applications are in with the FCC to spin off 14 stations in 10 markets to a divestiture trust headed by Scott Knoblauch. The stations will be assigned to Volt Radio, a divestiture trust with Scott Knoblauch as trustee. He already serves as trustee for Stratus Radio (WBCK-AM/Battle Creek, MI) and WI Radio (WKRU-FM/Allouez, WI and WWWX-FM/Oshkosh, WI). See the entire list... |

CNET Senior Commentator Brian Cooley was a keynote speaker at the NAB Radio luncheon yesterday and he opened some eyes describing the blazingly fast world of technological change we are now living in. In doing that, he pointed out the opportunities for radio. Cooley detailed how gadgets like music listening and reading devices will fall by the wayside to the up and coming tablets, that can do everything and are more pleasing to the eyes. He then added really big changes only come along once in a blue moon. And, we are getting a big blue moon right now from the explosion of smart phones and tablets. |

To a round of loud applause Gordon Smith said the NAB stopped that freight train. "Last year we stopped the legislation that would impose a performance tax on local radio stations. This was a freight train headed for passage. The White House was for it. Congressional leadership supported it. Both the House and Senate Judiciary Committees had passed it. This put radio in a position of maximum peril." |

The head honcho of CBS, Leslie Moonves, had a friendly fireside chat with NAB President Gordon Smith on Tuesday and while most of the discussion revolved around television, Moonves did throw the Radio people a few bones. From turning their radio station into Santa's workshop for a toy collection, to dropping a pink van from the sky to crush breast cancer to stuffing a bus full of school supplies, radio stations from across the country were recognized for their excellence in community work Tuesday. 10 stations, in all size markets, were honored with Crystal Radio Awards by the NAB and these stations really bring home how important radio is in our local communities. It's a great trait that no cool app or personalized Internet radio station can ever replace. It's the work of great managers and dedicated staff who work hard to help people and organizations in their hometowns that need a helping hand. |
