CBS President Dan Mason's Internet Frustration: “Bringing Our Own People Along”

CBS President Dan Mason's Internet Frustration: "Bringing Our Own People Along"

Five years ago CBS was not even streaming any radio stations on the Internet. Now, CBS Radio President Dan Mason admits even he has a player on his desktop where he switches back and forth from WFAN in New York to other stations on the CBS roster. It's in the background and on while he works. That's not the way it was in the past. And, that's not the way it is for everyone in CBS right now. "Our biggest frustration is educating and bringing along our own people, and to a lesser extent, repositioning this within the industry. Again, we do see this as co-mingling. We don't see this as one app, one source replacing another."

Mason: Radio Should Not Pay Any More Royalty Fees

Appearing at Kurt Hanson's R.A.I.N. conference yesterday, CBS President Dan Mason was hit with a question about the latest attempt to get Radio to pay more money for playing music and he was pretty clear. Radio should not have to pay any more than it does now. "From a terrestrial standpoint, broadcast radio, our position is radio has served the record industry well for a long time. We believe that we bring promotional value to the record industry. We don't believe we should pay a royalty. That's our position."

Fritts Receives NAB Distinguished Service Award.

Fritts, the former CEO of the NAB, said "I stand here filled with gratitude for the 23 years I was allowed to serve the organization and all the other years I was associated with the honorable calling." Fritts discussed an issue that has been around for decades and still haunts broadcasters today. "You've heard me say before, the NAB was founded in 1933 over the issue of copyrights and music. Well, here we are some 89 years later and the issue of performers royalty is again under consideration. Yes, it's true, in the world of Washington issues, there are no final victories and no final defeats."

Panel: "Wireless Services Ignoring FM. Prefer Revenue From Pandora"

One NAB panel yesterday was pretty animated as there is quite a bit of disagreement over whether FM chips should be embedded in cell phones. From the broadcasters side, Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan said "in a real emergency, we are the best option at delivering important alerts to end users." iBiquity Vice President Lane Burns said "high-definition radio could bring the value proposition of adding an FM chip to mobile devices because the service can offload traffic from the wireless operator's network and drive revenue to the operator by using music tagging services to push consumers to buy music from the wireless operator's website rather than a third-party site"

Cumulus Blows Out Long Time P.D. Cannon

Indianapolis will sound a little different. WFMS Program Director and afternoon jock J.D. Cannon is out without much of an explanation. Cumulus management only says "they appreciate his 32 years of service." Cannon says "he is thankful to the thousands of listeners who tuned into his program each day, and that he hopes to stay in Indianapolis."
