I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's August and I have some friendly reminders for your consideration.
First of all, your summer is almost over! If you haven't worked toward recharging your batteries, what are you waiting for? You owe it to yourself and your organization. Don't be the manager who says, "Yeah, I took a day or two and I'll take one more if I can find the time." You're not helping anyone by not finding the recharge time. Granted, it's never enough but do it!
Secondly: Use this time of year to reevaluate your personal and professional goals. This is the moment to ask some hard questions for the betterment of your improvement process. Is this how you envisioned the year to go? Are all of your key people feeling energized and in synch with the mission? Are there nagging areas of improvement that just don't seem to get done and for which you need to raise the priority and timeline urgency? Are there members of your team who are going through the motions and need to be recalibrated? Have you taken time with your staff to get out of your building and unite with the goal of making your radio station better? Are you monitoring the key efficiencies around how you do your own job? Have you become a slave to your computer, email, and cell phone to the point of sacrificing real interaction with your people on the ground?
Lastly, have you considered the necessary priorities to improve your brand? Have you asked the vital brand question: "Who are we and why does it matter?" Most importantly, as a radio programmer, you need to ask the brand question of whether you are navigating through PPM as a brand builder or a brand editor. So much regarding PPM has taught us how to minimize tune-out and that is certainly crucial, but what are you doing to build your brand and electrify your audience?
As your eyes glaze over at your favorite vacation spot, I wish you a relaxing and a recharging experience!
