Sileo had a short career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1987 and also played for the Miami Hurricanes made the remarks on his show Monday on WDAE, the Clear Channel owned sports station in Tampa. He was talking about the Bucs picking up three free agents -- Cortland Finnegan, Vincent Jackson and Jonathan Vilma, all of whom are African-American. Sileo said, "If they got those three monkeys, I'm good. I'm ready, man. I'm ready. I want those guys. Those guys are great players.'' Sileo is white.
Late Monday night, WDAE issued a statement saying, "He (Sileo) absolutely meant no disrespect to the players and he is sincerely embarrassed and upset that his off-the-cuff remarks might be taken as hateful, disrespectful, or in any way racist.'' Tuesday, that tone changed as Program Director Steve Versnick was quoted in the Tampa Bay Times saying "Dan Sileo is no longer with WDAE. We wish him the best.'' Sileo had been with the station since 1998
