Just when you thought the two major players in the radio app race were going to be iHeartRadio and Pandora, TuneIn continues to throw elbows trying to get into the game. The company took a nice step toward the front of the class yesterday when it announced it had secured CBS radio's spoken-word formats, including powerful brands like WFAN in NY, WIP in Philly and WBZ in Boston. Both Cumulus and Greater Media announced alliances with iHeartradio, although neither company has so far appeared on the device. None of the deals are exclusive. The CBS/TuneIn deal includes over 40 news, talk and sports stations. The terms of what TuneIn may have paid to have access to the CBS content was not announced.
VP of Programming at TuneIn Kevin Straley told Radio Ink last night, "We have more than 60,000 stations from around the world and continue to add to that offering. We recently announced strategic partnerships with ESPN, WOR and the Buckley Radio Group stations, WGN/Tribune Broadcasting, talkSPORT, and The Wall Street Journal Radio Network. Stay tuned for many other partnership announcements in the coming days, weeks and months."
Ezra Kucharz is the President of CBS Local Digital Media. ?We have always believed in the value of great local content, and this agreement validates the demand we know exists for our original programming while at the same time creates a new revenue source for the company. By forging relationships with premiere distribution services such as TuneIn, CBS RADIO will significantly grow its audiences by exposing our content to new listeners.?
TuneIn CEO John Donham said, ?We at TuneIn are thrilled to announce a long-term, strategic partnership with a company so innovative and important to the world of radio as CBS. By adding these CBS RADIO stations to our free service, we continue to make good on our promise to bring the best radio programming to TuneIn listeners from wherever they are.?
CBS also gets access to TuneIn?s free analytics via TuneIn Amplifier.
