The Village Voice reports that Pacifica's WBAI/New York, a 50-plus-year-old noncomm, has laid off its entire news department and most of the rest of the on-air talent as well. Andrew Phillips, former GM of Pacifica's KPFA/Berkeley, comes in as interim PD.
The Voice reports that the problems are budget-related, as WBAI GM Berthold Reimers said, "We have barely made our transmitter payments." He told listeners, "Most of the producers whose shows you value will not even have the chance to say goodbye to you, for which I am deeply sorry."
