Speaking at the New Music Seminar in New York Tuesday, CBS Radio President and CEO Dan Mason responded to comments made by SoundExchange CEO Michael Huppe, who, on Monday, said radio actually hurts record sales. Mason cited insight from Columbia Records that pegged the recent success of Daft Punk to the mystique surrounding the duo's latest release, a great social marketing campaign prior to street date, and Radio - the exposure to a mass audience is what really broke Daft Punk and made the difference. Mason said, "Radio has proven time and again it plays a vital role in the new music discovery process." In the Daft Punk example, CBS Radio's KROQ in Los Angeles was very instrumental in leading the way.
