The volunteer-run Radio Takoma is looking to be the first LPFM in the Washington, D.C area. Located in Takoma Park, MD, the group was granted a license to broadcast on WOWD-LP 94.3. Marika Partridge, Radio Takoma founder and a former NPR producer, told The Washington Post that the station will reach potentially 100,000 people in the northeast D.C./Silver Spring area. The eclectic programming will include Ethiopian storytelling, local history, gardening tips, and DJ hours hosted by high school students. The group is currently trying to raise funds to get the station launched this year.
