Not everyone took a liking to our headline yesterday "How Pandora Plans to Bury Radio." Mary Beth Garber is the President of the Southern California Broadcasters Association. Jill Falls Out at Amaturo. New Format "Playlist 92.7"

A new format entitled "Playlist 92.7" is now rolling across the Amaturo stations near L.A. Consultant Alan Burns is in on the format creation and he says it's more of a "format expansion". Most program director's would probably wince if they were told they had to play a whole lot more songs in the format. Burns says some PD's would consider this type of format change a 'train wreck".

Clear Channel Goes Gaga With Facebook.

Clear Channel Radio teamed with Lady Gaga for a cool Facebook promotion over Grammy weekend. The collaboration focused on the use Facebook instead of telephone request lines. Fans entered the contest via Facebook for a chance to win a trip to Lady Gaga’s first 2011 U.S. tour date in Atlantic City on February 19, meet Lady Gaga in person, and receive her autographed piano.

Emmis Back in Compliance With Nasdaq Rules

Today, the Nasdaq Stock Market informed Emmis Communications Corporation that the closing bid price of the Company’s Class A Common Stock (listed on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol “EMMS�) has been above $1.00 per share for at least ten consecutive trading days and that the Company is now in compliance with Marketplace Rule 5450(a)(1) (the “Minimum Bid Price Rule�).

Arbitron CEO Extends Employment Agreement.

Arbitron has given Kerr an extension of his employment agreement. Kerr will now be the CEO through January 10, 2013. His current agreement was set to expire January 10, 2012. “In the past year, Bill has led Arbitron through extraordinary events. Thanks to his guidance and to the hard work of the people at Arbitron, the Company is now better positioned to enhance the competitiveness of its radio ratings services, to enter new markets and deploy its resources for long-term growth,� said Philip Guarascio, Chairman of the Board, Arbitron Inc., in announcing the extension.

President Obama Submits $354 Million Budet request to Congress for FCC.

Pres. Submits $354 Million FCC Budet to Congress.

The requested funds would include: implementing the National Broadband Plan, a roadmap for economic growth and American competitiveness in the 21st century; overhauling the Commission’s data systems and processes, to streamline the FCC and make it even more effective; continuing to modernize and reform the FCC; strengthening the audit and investigation function of the Office of the Inspector General; and supporting the Commission’s public safety and cyber-security roles. The request would also provide funds to cover mandatory inflationary increases for contractual services.

Hired at 33, off the selling streets of North Carolina, I spent four years as editor of Radio Ink until the opportunity to run a cluster of Radio stations came along. I only left Radio Ink because I knew I had to be a General Manager at least once before I died.

Bruder's background includes serving as vice president and general manager for Beasley Broadcasting's Wired 96.5. She also served as the vice president and general manager for Radio One stations WPLY "Y100," WPHI 103.9 "The Beat" and WPPZ "Praise" in Philadelphia. Early in her career, Ms. Bruder held various roles including general manager and shareholder of Y100, a well known modern rock station owned by Greater Media Radio Company.

How Pandora Plans to Bury Radio. 

The Pandora shot across your Radio station remote vehicle axle has just been made. "Traditional radio stations broadcast the same content at the same time to all of their listeners". Ouch. That hurts. Pandora says "we enable each of our listeners to create up to 100 personalized stations." Traditional Radio programmers have always shied away from even letting an in-studio DJ vary from the format. Can you imagine what they would say if callers wanted to program songs? How many times has the PD said this during an "all request hour": "only play the songs in the format." And here is Pandora making a life out of such consumer-driven lunacy. It's a dilemma.
