It's not how anyone would want to end life. Dead in jail with pedophilia charges hanging over your head. That's the way former WNEW-FM morning personality Dave Herman will be remembered. The 78-year old Herman died yesterday, apparently from a fatal aneurysm while being held at the Essex County jail. He was awaiting federal charges after being arrested last October trying to meet a 6-year old girl for sex. Herman was arrested last year as part of a Bergen County, NJ, sting operation and charged with trying to transport a minor in order to engage in sexual activity.
Herman was arrested in October in the Virgin Islands, where he intended to meet a 6-year-old girl and her mother. Prosecutors say he made an agreement, not knowing he was communicating with an undercover investigator, to have the nonexistent girl brought to his vacation home for purposes of sex. His lawyer claimed Herman's intent was to have sex with the mother, not the girl. A plea agreement was reportedly being discussed.
Herman had been in federal custody since October. His radio career spanned more than 40 years, much of that in New York.
