Robert Fuller Receives Honorary Degree From St. Josephs

Radio broadcaster and station owner Robert Fuller - also known as Doc - told the 2011 graduates, "If it wasn't for the great people around me, I wouldn't have had the success I have had." Fuller founded WBLM, one of Maine's most popular radio stations for decades. In more than 50 years in radio -- from young disc jockey to program director to multi-station ownership -- Fuller has participated in serving the public. For many years WBLM and Fuller's other Maine radio stations were instrumental in the United Way campaigns, initiating the annual kickoff campaigns in Monument Square in Portland that attracted over 10,000 people. Nationally, his radio stations have supported, promoted and been involved with more than a 1,000 public service organizations in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Iowa, Colorado, Nevada and California.
A strong believer in the power of education, Bob has been a trustee, supporter and benefactor not only of Saint Joseph's College and Landmark School, but also Kents Hill School in Readfield, Maine. For many years, Bob served on the Board of Directors of the National Radio Broadcasters Association. More recently, he has served as a director on the board of Citadel Broadcasting in New York and Las Vegas. He has won the "Broadcaster of the Year" award from the New Hampshire Broadcasters Association and was named to the Maine Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 2008, he received a national award from the Broadcasters Foundation of America. In addition, he is an active supporter of the public nonprofit radio station, WYAR, in Yarmouth, Maine.

One of the true gentlemen of this business I was fortunate enought to work for Mr. Fuller (I still call him that) early in my career.

Felicidades!

It is a pleasure to read of this further recognition for "Doc." Any young person considering a career in broadcasting would be well advised to spend an hour with Doc Fuller, simply listening. What the young admirer would hear is a story of being connected to one’s community, right down to the minutest detail. Bob Fuller built his radio stations around what he heard and saw, not what he pre-supposed. He was the listener, and that is what made his stations great.

Congratulations , Bob.
