Heritage Rocker WRCN-FM To Become "LI News Radio"

11/15/13

JVC's WRCN rocks Long Island no more: The station has flipped to holiday music, and will become LI News Radio 103.9 as of December 26. JVC President/CEO John Caracciolo said in announcing the move in the station newsletter, "Long Islanders are starving for local news and information" and that the station will be a "sounding board for issues that influence your community and your life."

The station made the move at 5 p.m. Friday; Caracciolo said in the WRCN newsletter, "WRCN has a long history and heritage on Long Island; many of us have grown up with the station and it has become an intricate part of our lives. But as our lives change, so does our soundtrack. What we listened to growing up is not necessarily what we listen to now, and what was important to us as teenagers maybe doesn't seem so important anymore. That's why we made the decision to change WRCN and develop and program a radio station that fits the needs of Long Island."

He also said WRCN has "too much respect for our listeners and our advertisers" to plan a format flip in secret, and wrote,  "You as Long Islanders created [LI News Radio 103.9]; we took your thoughts, your ideas, and your passion."

Among those who'll be heard on the new LI News Radio will be Jay Oliver, Steve Levy, John Gomez, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, and Ernie Fasio. A preview page with political interviews is up now at http://www.linewsradio.com/.

Sounds like a long overdue idea.
