Social Changes Media

Social Changes Media

Twitter, Facebook, ning, and other social media sites have become major targeted outlets. They're the "big networks" of today, with vast audiences and the potential for deeper, more useful advertising alternatives that could replicate or even replace traditional media. Understanding how to leverage the social media phenomenon as a programming, promotion, and sales tool is critical.

There's a world of opportunity in social media -- and your business may be changed completely tomorrow by something you haven't even heard of today.

At the "How Social Has Changed Media" panel at Radio Ink's Convergence 2010, refine+focus CEO Zach Braiker leads a conversation with some people at the heart of all the energy around social media. Emmis Interactive co-President Rey Mena heads one of the most highly regarded developers for broadcasters' presence online. Jen McClure is a media-industry veteran and social media expert whose organization teaches how to harness the power of the fast-growing social media phenomenon, while Jordan Kretchmer is a former ad exec whose platform could revolutionize communication online. And Reggie Bradford is a genuine innovator in online social interactivity, earlier in his career with WebMD and now with social media marketer Vitrue.

Moderator

Zachary Braiker is President of refine+focus, a social media marketing agency. His firm develops engaged customer communities, executes social media promotions, and creates social brand experiences. Refine+focus' clients include Dancing Deer Baking Co., HipCricket, Humana, and Rapid Lash, among others. Braiker has actively contributed to the use of social media in the broadcasting industry, consulting Clear Channel New England, the Guardian Media Group, and Organizacoes Globo, and speaking for the NAB in Las Vegas and Rome. He writes and speaks frequently on social media, serving as an adjunct professor of social media at Emerson College and having attended Nokia's first OpenLab in Helsinki and BarCamp MIT.

The Panelists

Vitrue CEO Reggie Bradford brought nearly two decades of technology leadership and experience to the company he founded in 2006. Vitrue provides Fortune 1,000 brands a comprehensive social media marketing approach, empowering consumers to help build brands through online actions. Before Vitrue, Bradford was president and board member with TANDBERG Television, and he has also served as President/CEO of N2 Broadband and, from 1998-2000, as Chief Marketing Officer at WebMD. While at WebMD, he was instrumental in defining interactivity on the Web as a pioneer of social communities. WebMD later became one of the world's leading Internet destinations, with over 38 million unique visitors a month.

Rey Mena is the co-founder/President of Emmis Interactive Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Emmis Operating Co. Emmis Interactive provides local broadcasters and publishers with profitable, sustainable interactive businesses using its proprietary technology and proven sales model. As co-President, Mena is responsible for the company's overall strategy, with responsibilities including all technology and interactive product development, as well as interactive marketing and database strategies. Over the years, Mena has been a leading evangelist on the transformation required by traditional media companies in this digital age, and he is regularly invited to speak on the subject at media and investor conferences in the U.S., Canada, and the UK. In 2006, he was the architect behind the first ever integration of Apple iTunes' Music Store with radio station websites.

Jordan Kretchmer is founder and CEO of Livefyre Inc., with a background in product development and brand strategy. At the age of 17, Kretchmer started his full-time career, strategizing and designing Web applications for brands ranging from Subaru to Match.com to Pepsi to MINI Cooper. He spent nine years in the advertising industry, holding VP and Creative Director positions at Mullen Advertising in Boston and at Butler Shine Stern Partners in San Francisco, where he managed the digital development team. Before starting Livefyre, Kretchmer was the VP/Brand at CurrentTV in San Francisco, where he led brand redevelopment for the 400-person new media television company. At Livefyre, his goal is to connect the Internet's conversations through a single platform. Livefyre applies game mechanics to the everyday conversations that take place online, then connects people, content, and conversations based on shared topics of interest.
